Durham Castle was created in the 11th century to display the Norman king’s power in the north of England. The building is considered one of the high points in medieval architecture because of the span of time in which it was made (about 40 years) and the considerable unity in its style. The castle was used as the seat of the holder of the office «Bishop of Durham» and remained so until the bishops made Bishop Auckland their main residence and converted the castle into a college. Its massive Great Hall was at one point the largest in Britain until Bishop Richard Foxe had it slightly shortened at the end of the 15th century. Although Durham Castle is a working castle and home to over 100 students, it is open to general public for guided tours through this amazing historical landmark.

Greenwich is a district of South-East London, England, located in the London Borough of Greenwich. Greenwich is best known for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. The town became the site of a royal palace, the Palace of Placentia from the 15th century, and was the birthplace of many in the House of Tudor, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The palace was rebuilt as the Royal Naval Hospital for Sailors by Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, and they remained an establishment for military education until 1998 when they passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historic rooms within these buildings remain open to the public; other buildings are used by the University of Greenwich and the Trinity College of Music.

Kew Gardens are probably the best and most famous botanical gardens in the world and the model on which many others are based. There are several interesting buildings including a royal palace and large glasshouses ranging from a few years old to several hundred years housing tropical plants and even the oldest pot-plant which lives in the Palm-house. Outside there are plants and trees from all over the world. There are indoor and outdoor restaurants including one in the Orangery building. Kew Gardens is also used as a venue for summer concerts.

Derwent Valley Mills is a World Heritage Site along the River Derwent in Derbyshire, England, designated in December 2001. Stretching 15 miles down the river valley from Matlock Bath to Derby, the World Heritage Site contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes, including some of the world’s first «modern» factories. It is administered by the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership. The modern factory, or «mill», system was born here in the 18th century to accommodate the new technology for spinning cotton developed by Richard Arkwright. With advancements in technology, it became possible to produce cotton continuously. The system was adopted throughout the valley, and later spread so that by 1788 there were over 200 Arkwright-type mills in Britain. Arkwright’s inventions and system of organizing labour was exported to Europe and the United States.

Unit 5. Amazing Britain

Закінчення завдання

The castle sits atop a hill over the River Wear on the opposite end of another famous landmark, Durham Cathedral. In 1986 Durham Castle and Cathedral were inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as fine examples of Norman architecture in England. In 2008, Palace Green, the small area of grass that separates the castle and cathedral, was added to the existing UNESCO listing.

Bath is a city in the ceremonial county of Somerset in the south-west of England. It is situated 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. The city was first established as a spa resort with the Latin name, Aquae Sulis («the waters of Sulis») by the Romans in AD 43 although verbal tradition suggests that Bath was known before then. They built baths and a temple on the surrounding hills of Bath in the valley of the River Avon around hot springs which are the only ones naturally occurring in the United Kingdom. Edgar was crowned king of England at Bath Abbey in 973. Much later, it became popular as a spa resort during the Georgian era which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone. The City of Bath was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city has a variety of theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues which have helped to make it a major centre for tourism, with over one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year.
