Aims of the lesson
The educational aim: to practice pronunciation of some difficult words, to practice using vocabulary, to practice using Present Perfect in sentences, to practice answering the questions.
The development aim: pupils get new words, to be able to read new words correctly, to develop speech gift, to continue to acquire skills on grammar.
The up-bringing aim: to educate the feeling of international friendship and to work with creatively.
Aids and materials for the lesson: book, computer, whiteboard, audio-video materials
Procedure of the lesson
I. Organization moment
T: Good morning, dear pupils!
P: Good morning, teacher!
T: Take your seats. Who is on duty today? Is anybody absent today?
P: I’m on duty today. All are present.
T: Well, let’s begin our lesson.
I. Checking up home task:
Teacher: What was your home task for today?
Pupil: Our home task was to write short essay about travelling.
II. Warm-up activity:
Today we are going to combine word with the vowel “Y” and we must know their pronouncing differences. So, when you hear the vowel “Y”, what kind of associations come to your mind?
III. Presentation:
Teacher: So, we will begin our new material and this is about letter Y. Sometimes, the letter Y is a consonant and other times it is a vowel. The rule for telling the two apart is simple: The letter y is a consonant when it is the first letter of a syllable that has more than one letter. If y is anywhere else in the syllable, it is a vowel.
Examples of Y as a Consonant:
· Yes
· Yam
· Yellow
· Yogurt
Examples of Y as a Vowel:
· Gym
· My
· Cycle
· Baby
· Sky
Letter “Y” has several different sounds:
• As English pronunciation: /j/:
q the beginning of a word as in yes
• As non-syllabic [ɪ]:
q after some vowels in diphthongs, as in play, grey, boy
• As English pronunciation: /i/:
q without stress at the end of multi-syllable word as in baby, happy
q used in combination with e at the end of words, as in money, key
• As English pronunciation: /ɪ/:
q in a closed syllable without stress and with stress as in myth, system, gymnastics
q in a closed syllable under stress as in typical, lyric
q in an open syllable without stress as in physique, pyjamas
• As English pronunciation: /aɪ/:
q under stress in an open syllable as in my, type, rye, lying, pyre, tyre, typhoon
q in a stressed open syllable as in hyphen, cycle, cylon
q in the following words: ally, hypothesis, psychology
