18) The verb Kick.

 

kick – бить (ногой); бросать

The boy kicked the ball.

I want to kick the habit.

kick back – давать взятку

I will do that if you kick back 1,000 bucks.

kick off – выбить мяч; начать

John kicked off and the football started.

Jim Morrison kicked off his concert with a speech.

kick over – начинать работать (о механизме)

The motor does not kick over.

kick around – обижать

In a loosing stack Bob liked sometimes to kick around every one.

kick down – сбавлять скорость

On this rough road you should kick the car a bit down.

kick out – выставлять (на фиг)

They will kick you out of college for cheating in exams.

kick oneself – корить себя

I kicked myself for making such a stupid mistake.

kick the bucket – отбросить копыта, двинуть кони

Old Mr. Jackson kicked the bucket last week.

kick up one’s heels – кутить, шумно отмечать

After the exams all the class went down to town to kick up their heels.

 

 

19) The verb Play.

 

play – играть

He can play chess well.

play hockey – прогуливать

Some boys often play hockey with the classes.

play to the gallery – играть на публику

Jerry is a kind of boy who likes to play to the gallery.

play someone dirt – подложить свинью

You played me dirt when you refused to help me.

play handies – дружить, гулять вместе

Jane and Bruce are playing handies together.

play hell with oneself – разговаривать с самим собой

Old people often play hell with themselves.

play hard to get – корчить из себя недотрогу

Do not play hard to get you, Sondra.

play ball – действовать заодно

The head master will not play ball with all of the teachers.

play the field – иметь отношения со многими партнерами

Sam seems to be playing the field, every day I see him with different girls.

play jokes on – подшучивать

The students played a joke on the English tutor.

 

20) The verb Talk.

 

talk – разговаривать, беседовать

Come here; I want to talk to you.

talk back – огрызаться

So many times I told you, never talk back to Ivon.

talk into – уговорить, уболтать

It was you who talked me into coming here.

talk out – высказаться

What about just to let him talk out.

talk down – задолбать, достать

Gosh! He talked me down.

talk smth. over – обговорить, обсудить

Let’s talk the problems over.

now you’re talking – Где ты раньше был? С этого надо было начинать!

– But I have one extra course.

– Now you are talking.

you can talk – А ты-то сам!

– Don’t play your radio so loud!

– You can talk.

talk a blue streak – говорить без умолку

He can talk a blue streak if you give him a chance.

talk of the devil/angel – легок на помине

Talk of the devil! Here he is now.

Here is our coach! Talk of the angel.
