Do you belong to the advertising community? Are you subjected to verbal bashing by people, known and unknown, about the deterioration of the industry and the lack of creative advertising ideas? If your answer to these questions are in the affirmative, then you are lucky, as this article advises you on how to enhance your ad campaigns.

Remember Batman, the savior of Gotham city? Well, for me, the one thing synonymous with the caped crusader was his symbol in the sky, the sign used by Commissioner Gordon and the police to call him. Effective as it was, I think that was also probably one of the best advertising gimmicks in the comic world. A symbol that marketed him to Gotham city and the real world. But that was a comic series and as much as we would like it to be, advertising is not that simple.
Advertising, in purely industrial terms, is defined as the act of promoting, either a product or a business, in order to increase revenue. While the definition is simplified, the actual process of coming up with aggressive marketing and advertising ideas, is a mammoth task. In a world, where hundreds of thousands of products and businesses are fighting for shelf space, how does one make sure that his ideas for advertising products will hit the bullseye? That is where the notion of creative advertising ideas come into picture. It is difficult to grab eyeballs in a technologically overfed world, but it is not impossible.
Creatively Advertise
"At 60 miles an hour, the loudest noise in this new Rolls Royce, comes from the electric clock."
David Ogilvy, the father of modern advertising, created one of the most iconic automobile ads ever when he released this ad. It surpassed other famous advertising slogans. It did not have loud graphics or brilliant colors, but it will always be counted amongst the greatest advertising ideas of the period. Modern advertising methods can retrace their history to these ads that changed the way the world looked at advertising. While not all of us are blessed with Ogilvy's mind or creative thought process, there are a few tactics available to us, to ensure that our ad does not become a run of the mill ad.
Metaphorical Ads: Best advertising ideas can always combine two very different imageries to put our point across. Compare your product to things that no one would dream of doing. Spontex, a well-known sponge manufacturer, used this tactic to their benefit, when they released an ad, with the image of an African woman, carrying their super absorbent sponge, instead of a bucket to carry water.
Get Real: While the rest of the world spends their money on big celebrities and super models, you could stand apart by having real people as your models. People will relate to the ad as your models will be speaking to them and not at them. Creative advertising techniques do not always demand star power.
Shock Treatment: The consumer always craves for something new. If every automobile ad is going to feature vehicles on difficult terrain, sooner or later they are going to tune off. PETA specializes in shocking their viewers. Their live installation ad against packaged meat, where they had activists posing nude in huge plastic containers with labels of human meat stuck to them, drew a huge response.
Characterize: If you need one of those advertising ideas that will last a lifetime, then you could create a character that will appeal to the masses. 7Up's Fido Dido character created in 1985 and licensed to PepsiCo in 1988, is synonymous even today with the soft drink brand.
Exaggerate: Marketing and advertising ideas that could work brilliantly, are exaggerating the product in the ad campaign. When PepsiCo launched their mini cans, they plastered the world with their ad wherein, they showed a giant hand holding a tiny glass with Pepsi in it.
Celebrity Power: It is an overdone concept. Signing up celebrities to endorse products is hardly creative. But what if you can come up with something novel like Genworth Financial did. An offshoot of GE Financial, the company had a brilliant television commercial where they showed a small boy giving the tennis player Taylor Dent a run for his money. It is only in the last 10 seconds or so, that you come to know, that the boy is Andre Aggasi and Steffi Graf's son. And then they have the tag-line, "The right genes make all the difference."

Buzz Them: Buzz marketing and word-of-mouth advertising work excellently as creative advertising ideas for small businesses. But in recent times, there are several major companies that have used these advertising techniques. The band Oasis, used this advertising idea in a modified manner, when they were about to launch their album, 'Dig out your soul'. They gave the songs from the album to New York street musicians to perform and the band had their songs playing everywhere from parks to the roads. Such techniques also double up as cheap advertising ideas.
Local Power: If you work for small businesses and are racking your brains for local advertising ideas, then remember to contact the local newspaper, cable channel and radio stations. Some other effective small business advertising ideas are to hold open houses, exhibitions, fairs, public performances, etc. You could also probably gain some brownie points from your client, by giving him some free advertising ideas, like asking him to work out a barter system with another business, which would therefore mutually benefit the two.
Advertising is about capturing the consumer's attention amongst a multitude of other ads. Be precise and convey your information in a gist. Highlight the selling points of your product. Do not be overtly forceful, but be convincing to make your point. In a bid to be creative, do not sideline the traditional print advertising ideas or television commercials. There are always different types of advertising available to you. Remember great advertising ideas are like gymnasts. You need that fine balance.
