My Family

Let me introduce myself to you. I am Olexandr Petrenko. I’m nearly eighteen. I live in Sumy. Now I want to tell you a few words about my family.

Our family is neither large nor small. I am not the only child in the family. My parents have two more children besides me. Thus I have got an elder brother and a younger sister.

First of all I’d like to say a few words about my parents. They are not old at all. Father is forty five, mother is three years his junior. My father is a veterinarian and runs a clinic for pets. He is a tall well-built man with curly dark hair and brown eyes. My dad is handy with many things and can fix almost everything in our house. He is a very sociable person. I think I take after him. My mum is a good-looking woman. She is an experienced economist. She is fond of house plants very much. We have a lot of pots with different indoor plants on the windowsills, shelves and even on the floor. My parents have been married for 25 years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books and films. For example, my father likes detective stories but my mother prefers romantic ones. My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesn’t go in for sports at all.

My sister Helen is a pupil of the tenth form. She is two years my junior. Helen is rather tall and slender. She is a blue-eyed, fair-haired girl. My sister is a very active young person. She is fond of music and dancing.

My brother is six years my senior. He is a civil engineer, very efficient and professional. He is married and has his own family. They are four in the family. My brother has a wife and two children – a son and a daughter. His wife is a manager. My sister-in-law is a very elegant woman, always well-dressed. She is energetic and industrious, with a sense of humour. My niece Masha and my nephew Sashko are still very little. They are pretty children and I like to play with them.

My grandparents live in the country. They are pensioners. We often visit them and help in their garden. I have both aunts and uncles. They live in different places. We are always glad to see each other.

Answer the questions.

1) What is Olexandr’s family like?

READING and writing

14. Read the description of Aunt Emily, identify the parts which describe: a) appearance; b) character; c) hobbies and interests.

Aunt Emily

Off all my relatives, I like my aunt Emily the best. She’s my mother’s younger sister. She has never married, and she lives alone in a small village near Bath. She’s in her late fifties, but she is still quite young in spirit. She has a fair complexion, thick brown hair which she wears in a bun, and dark brown eyes. She has a kind face, and when you meet her, the first thing you notice is her lovely, warm smile. Her face is a little wrinkled now, but I think she is still rather attractive. She is the sort of person you can always go to if you have a problem.

She likes reading and gardening, and she goes for long walks over the hills with her dog, Buster. She’s a very active person. Either she’s making something, or mending something, or doing something to help others. She does the shopping for some of the old people in the village. She’s extremely generous, but not very tolerant with people who don’t agree with her. I hope that I am as happy and contented as she is when I’m her age.

My Working Day

The typical day in our family begins at six o’clock when my parents get up. My mother starts her morning with going to the kitchen and preparing breakfast for the whole family. My father runs in the park every morning. When he returns he takes a cold shower and shaves. Then he wakes me up (and it is not an easy task at all I must say). It is very difficult for me to get up at once as I am not an early riser. In the morning I usually do some morning exercises and take a cold shower. It takes me about twenty minutes to get ready for breakfast. We gather for breakfast at about seven o’clock. It consists of some porridge, a cup of tea or coffee, toast or bread with butter.

At ten minutes past seven I leave home for university. I live far from it so I usually catch a bus or taxi. It takes me forty minutes to get there. Classes start at eight o’clock sharp. I usually have three or four classes a day. I attend lectures or have practical classes. Sometimes I have lunch at the university canteen. After classes I often go to the library to prepare for my seminars. I come back home tired, have my dinner and have a short rest or go for a walk with my friends. Two times a week (usually it is on Tuesday and Thursday) I go to the swimming pool to keep myself fit.

In the evening when all the members of the family are at home we have supper. We inform news and share our impressions about the day that has passed. I seldom go out in the evening on week days as I am busy doing my homework. Sometimes I have to sit up late. But when my homework is ready I relax in front of my computer chatting to my friends on line or just surfing the Internet. I usually go to bed with a good book and read in bed before going to sleep.

Answer the questions.

Daily Routine

Hi! I’m Helen and I’m in my first year at the university. My elder sister, Ann studies economics at the same university. Ann can organize her time wisely, whereas I don’t know what order I should do things in. I find it hard to get up on time, and usually I don’t get enough sleep. I wind two alarm-clocks to make sure I don’t oversleep.

My sister, an early riser, is up by 7 o’clock. While I’m wandering round the kitchen fighting the urge to go back to bed, sister manages to have a quick shower, make her bed, put on make up, do her hair, eat a full breakfast and set off to the university. It takes me an hour and a half to get ready. I have a hasty bite and rush out of the house. Even if I catch a bus at once I still arrive at the university 15 minutes late, which always makes me feel guilty.

My study keeps me busy all day long. I have 6 hours of English a week. I also have lectures and seminars. At lunchtime I meet up with my sister and we have a snack at the university cafe. After classes I go to the library where I spend about six hours a week reading for my seminars. My sister and I come home tired. I always find excuses to put my homework off. Unlike me the sister manages to do the housework and get down to homework. I like the idea of going to bed early, but quite often I have to sit up late, brushing up my grammar and vocabulary, though I feel sleepy. My sister says that keeping late hours ruins one’s health. Of course, I agree.

As my sister and I do not get any time off during the week, we try to relax on the weekends. One of my greatest pleasures is to lie in bed and read my favourite books. My sister is a sporty person. To keep herself fit, Ann goes for a run in the park, from time to time she works out in the gym.

I hate staying in, and sometimes on Saturday night my sister takes me out to a concert or a play. Sometimes we go to a party or to a disco. But more often than not I end up catching up on my studies and my sister goes out. I wonder how I manage to spoil my leisure time.

Every Monday when I awaken I think I should start a new life. I honestly think I must become well-organized and correct my daily routine. I make plans to go to keep-fit classes, to do shopping with my sister, to do the cleaning and to do a hundred other good things. But then I remember that I have to call on my school friend in the evening, and I put off my plans till next Monday. It is always better to start a new life in a week.
