Незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс (The Absolute Participle Complex)
В українській мові підрядне обставинне речення (наприклад, часу або причини) може бути замінене дієприслівниковим зворотом, якщо в головному і підрядному реченнях підмет той самий, хоч в одному з них він може бути виражений іменником, а в другому — відповідним особовим займенником.
Наприклад: Коли Петро повернувся з Києва, він розповів нам про виставку. Повернувшись з Києва, Петро розповів нам про виставку. (В обох реченнях підмет позначає ту саму особу.)
Якщо в головному і підрядному реченнях підмети різні, то така заміна неможлива.
В англійській мові заміна обставинного підрядного речення зворотом з participle можлива і тоді, коли в головному і підрядному реченнях підмети різні.
Наприклад: When Peter came home from Kiev, we asked him to tell us about the exhibition. Peter coming home from Kiev, we asked him to tell us about the exhibition.
Peter coming home from Kiev не підрядне речення, а незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс (the Absolute Participle Complex), що складається з іменника у загальному відмінку (або особового займенника у називному відмінку) і дієприкметника. У цьому комплексі Peter виконує роль підмета по відношенню до дієприкметника і не є підметом усього речення.
У незалежному дієприкметниковому комплексі можуть вживатися всі форми participle.
У реченні незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс виконує функції обставин (часу, причини, способу дії, умови):
The rain having stopped we went home. - Коли дощ ущух, ми пішли додому.
The day being very fine, she went for a walk. - Оскільки день був дуже гарний, вона пішла на прогулянку.
Незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс перекладається на українську мову:
а) підрядним обставинним реченням:
The letter being written, I went to post it. - Коли лист був написаний, я пішла відправити його.
б) простим реченням, що входить до складносурядного:
They went quickly out of the house, Jude accompanying her to the station. - Вони швидко вийшли з дому, і Джуд провів її до вокзалу.
в) дієприслівниковим зворотом:
Her face smiling, she came into the room. - Усміхаючись, вона увійшла в кімнату.
Крім цього, незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс може перекладатися на українську мову головним реченням в складнопідрядному, вставним реченням, іменником з прийменником:
He came into the room, his face smiling. - Він увійшов до кімнати з усміхненим обличчям.
Незалежний дієприкметниковий комплекс може вводитись прийменником with. Такий комплекс вживається у функції обставини способу дії або супровідних обставин і перекладається на українську мову здебільшого самостійним реченням або дієприслівниковим зворотом:
He was standing, with his arms crossed and his head bent. - Він стояв, схрестивши руки і опустивши голову.

Ex. 1. Change the sentences according to the given models:
Model 1: As my work is very difficult, he helps me.
My work being very difficult, he helps me.
Model 2: When all the properties of the element had been discovered, it was easier to use it.
All the properties of the element having been discovered, it was much
easier to use it.
1. As their lectures begin in the morning, they are free at five o’clock.
2. When the solution had been evaporated, they begin to examine the crystals left.
3. Since the speed of light is extremely great we cannot measure it by ordinary means.
4. As there is a great deal of impurities in the solution, it has to be filtered.
5. As this machine works well, we can use it at our plant.
6. After the book had been read, I gave it to my friend.
Ex. 2. Compare the following pairs of sentences and translate them into Ukrainian:
1. This scientist being in our country got interested in our system of education.
2. Mendeleyev being a great chemist, his name is well known all over the world.
3. Having carried out a series of analyses, he could make some interesting conclusions.
4. The scientist having carried outhis investigations in the laboratory, we could ask him about the results.
5. The phenomenon discovered by him helped us greatly in our research work.
6. The melting point having been discovered, it was possible to continue our research work.
Ex. 3. Change the sentences according to the given model:
Model: Rain falling on the ground, the soil absorbs the water.
When rain falls on the ground the soil absorbs the water.
1. The experiments proved the speed of a chemical action to be altered by a catalytic agent, the condition of equilibrium being unchanged.
2. Chlorine water having been added to mercurous chloride and to potassium iodide solution, the students were asked to describe the effects observed.
3. When we drink water it is almost immediately coursing through our system, the body being purified of poison which is carried off in solution.
4. Water is necessary for the existence of man, animals and plants, every living thing containing large amounts of water.
5. When sea water freezes the salt separates from it, ice being quite pure.
6. Water is never absolutely pure in nature, the amount of impurities depending upon the locality.
7. We have three lectures today, the last being on ecology.
8. Some exercises being very difficult, I asked my friend to help me.
9. Some of the most difficult problems having been solved, we decided to have a rest.
