1. Посеред кімнати стояв на мольберті зроблений у повен зріст портрет надзвичайно вродливого юнака. Раптове зникнення його автора кілька років тому схвилювало все лондонське товариство і викликало багато дивних загадок.

2. На цім світі виграють лише потвори та нездари. Вони можуть невимушено сидіти і позіхати на вистави життя. Вони живуть так, як ми всі мали б жити: байдужно, без турбот, без хвилювань.

3. Завдяки таємничності сучасне життя може бути чудесним чи заманливим для нас. Звичайнісінька річ стає чарівною, скоро тільки ми криємося з нею.

4. Кожен портрет, намальований з натхненням – це, власне, портрет художника, а не того, хто йому позував. Митець на полотні розкриває не його, а скоріше самого себе. Та він, мабуть, тільки у ньому виказує секрети власної душі.

7. Кожна верства полюбляє проповідувати важливість чеснот, непотрібних їй самій. Багаті охоче розводяться про значення ощадності, а нероби красномовно обстоюють гідність праці. Я глибоко співчуваю люті англійського плебейства на те, що вони називають «розбещеністю вищих класів».

8. Вартість ідеї не має нічого спільного з щирістю людини, котра ії висловила. У нашу добу люди тлумачать мистецтво, як різновид автобіографії. Ми втратили абстрактне почуття краси. Та все ж люди могли би угадати правду, а я не збираюсь оголювати душу перед їхніми хтивими очима. Я ніколи не покладу своє серце під мікроскоп.

9. Я вважаю, що ті, що зберігають вірність у любові, знають тільки тривіальний її бік. І лише невірні взмозі пізнати любовні трагедії. І ще. В шаленій боротьбі за існування ми прагнемо бодай щось мати тривке й постійне і тому хапаємось натовчувати собі голови мотлохом різних фактів у марній надії втримати своє місце в житті.

10.Коли усі вже пішли додому, він дістав сірника з витонченої срібної коробки і запалив цигарку. При цьому вигляд він мав такий, наче пізнав усю життєву мудрість.
