Discussion

1. In groups discuss a typical parent/child conflict in your coun­try.

2. Young people often ask for help and advice on how to cope with their parents. Say what problems you had most frequently with your parents as a teen-ager. What were the reasons for conflicts and fric­tions?

3. What problems do you have with your parents now? What subjects and topics do you usually agree or disagree on? Say what areas cause most problems and make the adults in your house really angry.

4. Do you think that friction between young people and their parents is inevitable? Why?

5. What do or will you do to cut down on friction when you are parents yourselves?

6. Some people say that parents are too permissive with their chil­dren today. The children's happiness is all-important, but the excessive permissiveness of modern parents is doing more harm than good. Expand on the topic.

7. It goes without saying that every new generation is different from the one that preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed. Think of any examples.

8. Some politicians have suggested that adulthood should begin at the age of 16. They argue that at that age young people are mature enough to drink alcohol without restriction, decide for themselves whether to marry or not, vote, go to jail and generally take responsibility for their own lives. But what do you think?

Listen to the scene. Then read the statements and mark T (true), F (false) or NG (not given)

Make up dialogues on one of the following situations.

Situation 1

Mother finds out that the 14-year-old daughter smokes. She forbids the girl to meet with her friends.

Situation 2

The father thinks the 17-year-old daughter is too young to go out on dates. Besides mother doesn’t like the daughter’s boy-friend. The girl argues.

Situation 3

Mother and daughter argue on the clothes the daughter wears. The girl doesn’t like the things that mother buys for her. She’d like mother to let her buy things to wear herself.

Situation 4

Parents do not let their 16-year-old daughter spend the summer holidays at the seaside with her friends. They suggest spending holidays together with the family. The girl is sure she is too adult to go anywhere with parents.

 

Situation 5

Mother is offended by daughter’s ignorance of household chores. The girl is sure that she does as much as she can but mother is always unpleased.
