Тунелі.

Інженери будують різні види тунелів: тунелі під водою, тунелі у гірській породі та тунелі у м’яких земляних породах (soft-ground tunnels). Для цього використовуються різноманітні техніки. Звичною є методика прокладання тунелю через гірську породу з допомогою буріння отвору в ній. Іншою є техніка системних секцій, що опускаються під воду. Ще одна техніка побудови тунелів для метро – це прокоп тунелю відкритим способом. Однак цей метод можна застосовувати, коли тунель розміщується зразу ж під поверхнею землі.

Найбільшою проблемою в усіх тунелях, а особливо у тих, які використовуються автомобільним транспортом, є проблема вентиляції. Тому більшість таких тунелів мають дві системи труб для вентиляції. Свіже повітря закачується в одну з них, в той час як забруднене повітря висмоктується через другу.
