Exercise 1.. Learn the forms of the modal verb ‘can’ — мочь, уметь, иметь

физическую возможность, разрешать..

 

Exercise 2. Read the sentences with ‘can’. Translate them from English

into Russian.

1. I can read English books. 2. He can give me a job. 3. You can ask me

a question. 4. We can show you our collection. 5. She can buy an expensive

apartment. 6. I can bring our time log. 7. They can see our samples. 8. You

can write a good report. 9. We can sell our inn in the city.10. He can meet

our customers in his office.

Exercise 3. Make these sentences interrogative and translate them from

English into Russian.

1. Mr Brown can come on Tuesday. 2. You can spell your name. 3. The

workers can ask her about it. 4. We can talk about our new transaction

today. 5. You can go to this famous fair. 6. Our Market Manager can

sometimes make a mistake. 7. Our guests can use our new software. 8. The

accountant can work on Saturday. 9. We can use this opportunity. 10. We

can find new suppliers.

Exercise 4. Answer these questions about yourself.

Model: Can you write a report? — Yes, I can. No, I can’t.

Exercise 5. Pronounce the new verbs and learn them.

head — вести, руководить; promote — продвигать, содействовать;

ensure — обеспечивать, гарантировать; motivate — мотивировать;

range from — колебаться, ранжировать, варьировать; include — вклю-

чать; redesign — переконструировать; increase — увеличивать, повы-

шать; conduct — проводить; determine — определять; attend — посе-

щать; identify — распознавать, устанавливать; set an example to sb —

служить примером

Exercise 6. Translate the sentences paying attention to the new verbs.

1. He can head a team. 2. He promotes new products in his job. 3. Can

you ensure good results? 4. Their product line ranges from bags to

umbrellas. 5. The price includes the service. 6. Redesign this house!

7. Don’t increase the price! 8. He can’t determine the tendency. 9. We

attend all the lessons. 10. Can we conduct the analysis on Friday? 11. We

can’t identify the product. 12. He usually sets an example to all our

employees.

Exercise 7. Learn the forms of the modal verb ‘must’ — должен, обязан.

Pay attention to the translation of the forms.

You must — ты должен, обязан.

Must you? — Ты должен?

You mustn’t — Ты не должен/Тебе нельзя.

Exercise 8. Read the following verbs and use them to say what you must or

mustn’t do.

Model: I must read. I mustn’t write.

ask stupid questions, increase the prices, attend an exhibition, find

a new job, forget my goals, choose a present, meet an important guest,

make a mistake, say good bye, work hard

Exercise 9. Study the suffixes of nouns (существительное), adjectives

(прилагательное) and adverbs (наречие). Translate the words

from English into Russian. Use a dictionary if necessary. Learn

the new words.

nouns.(n).: -ion/tion, -ment, -ancy, -ence, -ity, -er/or, -ness, - ist, -ing

Model: demonstrate — demonstration (демонстрировать — демон-

страция)

collaborate — collaboration, motivate — motivation, manage —

management, popular — popularity, promote — promotion, exhibit —

exhibition, consume — consumer, compete — competitor, direct —

director, weak — weakness, industrial — industrialist, shop — shopping,

meet — meeting, begin — beginning

adjectives.(adj.).: -ive, -al, -able, -less, -ed, ous, -ful, -an, -ish, -ic

Model: manager — managerial (управленец — управленческий)

comprehend — comprehensive, education — educational, note —

notable, wire — wireless, vary — varied, nerve — nervous, beauty —

beautiful, skill — skillful, Russia — Russian, England — English, Spain —

Spanish, magnet — magnetic

adverbs.(adv.):. -ly

Model: active — actively (активный — активно)

beautiful — beautifully, skillful — skillfully, effective — effectively,

relative — relatively, calm — calmly, smart — smartly, bad — badly

But: good — well

Exercise 10. Define the part of speech (noun, adjective, adverb) of the

following words. Translate the words from English into

Russian.

American, revolution, cofounder, nearly, personal, nationality,

influential, manufacturer, electronic, inventor, bad-tempered, developer,

expensive, opportunity, important, collection, sophisticated,

determination, apartment, human, hectic, identification, comprehensive,
