MY HOME
The house I live in is a block of flats. It is in the suburb of the city. In our house there are several flats on each storey. Ours is a comfortable three-room flat on the second floor. We moved into this new flat together with many other families of the workers of the factory at which my father works.
To get home from the Institute I usually take a tram. Sometimes I go home by bus, especially if I am late for dinner. I get off the tram at the tram stop which is not far from our house. The house stands a little way back from the road and has a fine garden round it.
We are five in the family. My father is a middle-aged man. He works at a big car factory. My mother is a housewife. She is always busy with her work, though in the new flat it is much easier to keep house than it was in the old one. Now we have all the services in our flat. My sister is sixteen years old. She is in her tenth form at school. My brother is twenty-five years old. He works at a mine as a mining engineer. He is not married and lives with us.
I usually come home at 6 o’clock and have my dinner. After dinner I rest a little. I do my homework in the evening. At eleven o’clock I go to bed.

“SMART” HOUSES OF THE FUTURE
What will 21st century houses be like? Taller, bigger or the same? Experts believe that like the 2Ist century cities, even houses will change. For better or for worse, we shall see later.
Each house will have а сеntral computer. This will control:
Heat…by switching from ordinary electricity to power from the solar panels whenever possible.
Entertainment/Lights… automatically turning on/off the T.V., video, hi-fi etc. at the sound of your voice — such as “Turn the lights off, computer”.
Security… with the help of smoke detectors, burglar alarms and a front door video camera showing the visitors’ faces on the screen.
That’s not all. By the year 2000 most phones will store messages in electronic microchips. These will tell callers (when necessary) that the line is busy, or their call is being transferred to another number.
You will also be able to program future phones just like videorecorders. This means, that you will be able to stop calls made by anyone else or automatically transfer calls from your home phone to another number.
In addition to this, there will be special “fibre optic cables” in tomorrow’s “smart house”, too, connected to the T.V., phone and computer. They will help you receive and send all kinds of information such as pictures, documents etc. What does this mean? It means that citizens of the 21st century will be able to vote, do the shopping, go to the bank, study with the help of T.V with students participating from all over the world, talk to and see people on the other side of the world, take part in television programmes.
