Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

Exercise 2. Translate the sentences from English into Russian /Ukrainian.

1. Harry looked down at the pair of white rabbits he was supposed to be turning into slippers.

2. They sat there, excitement coursing through them, hardly able to believe it.

3. No afternoon ever lasted as long as that one, nor had Gryffindor Tower ever been so crowded, yet so quiet.

4. He didn’t seem to notice that the other teachers were looking at him with something like hatred.

5. He couldn’t go, not now they had found the entrance to the Chamber, not if there was even the faintest, slimmest, wildest chance that Ginny might be alive.

 

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English.

1. З багатьох грізних звірів і потвор, що мешкають у наших краях, найдивнішим і найжахливішим є Василіск, відомий ще під назвою Зміїний король.

2. Локарт розгублено озирнувся, але ніхто не прийшов йому на допомогу.

3. Коли б він міг щось зробити. Бодай що-небудь!

5. Джині вже кілька годин перебувала в Таємній кімнаті.

 

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

1. Madam Pomfrey let them in, but unwillingly.

2. Harry turned around to stare at Ron.

3. Some of them were looking puzzled, others completely scared.

4. Lockhart became pale.

5. Harry decided what he was going to do.

Exercise 5. Answer the following questions:

1. What was in Hermione’s hand?

2. What was the only spell Professor Lockhart was good at?

3. Where was the Chamber of Secrets hidden?

4. Why did Ron stay in the tunnel?

5. What happened with Ron’s wand?

Exercise 6.

Grammar revision. Comment on the use of the definite article in the following sentences and translate them into Russian / Ukrainian.

 

1) They let the rest of the Gryffindors draw ahead of them.

2) I can’t be the only parselmouth in the school.

3) “Just the man,” he said. “The very man.”

4) Harry knew the whole mystery might be solved tomorrow without their help.

5) This is the answer.
