Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

 

1) to bombard with questions; 2) the coming year; 3) moulting gray feather duster; 4) to be up to; 5) a pinch of glittering powder; 6) Don’t go biting off more that you can chew; 7) the breakneck journey; 8) forget-me-not blue; 9) to be a disgrace to name of wizard. 10) to be prone to; 11) to blush to the roots of one’s hair 12) to clear the table; 13) to bear in mind; 14) a roll of parchment; 15) to command a respect; 16) surge of anger; 17) flight of steps; 18) by no means; 19) to burst into appause; 20) to fuss over smth.  

Exercise 2. Translate the sentences from English into Russian /Ukrainian.

1. I don’t think I could stand the shame.

2. Dizzy and bruised, covered in soot, he got gingerly to his feet, holding his broken glassed up to his eyes.

3. The sooner he got out of here, the better.

4. The real Lockhart was wearing robes of forget-me-not blue that exactly matched his eyes; his pointed wizard’s hat set a jaunty angle on his wavy hair.

5. A stooping man had appeared behind the corner, smoothing his greasy hair back from his face.

 

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English.

1. Він був сам-один, і не мав жодного уявлення, де опинився.

2. До сейфів треба було добиратися візочками, якими керували гобліни і які мчали мініатюрними рейками вздовж підземних банківських тунелів.

3. Гаррі купив три великі порції полунично-горіхового морозива, яке вони з насолодою наминали, прямуючи вуличкою і оглядаючи дивовижні вітрини крамниць.

4. Продавець глянув на них, ніби збирався їх зупинити, але він ледве сягав Хагрідові до пояса, і тому вчасно схаменувся.

5. Цей спосіб пересування явно не належав до його улюблених.

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion

1. Dumbledore already knows you’re here, Harry, - always knows exactly what is happening, that man.

2. Well, that goes well with our plans nicely, we can go and get all your things then, too.

3. Dizzy and bruised, covered in soot, he got carefully to his feet, holding his broken glassed up to his eyes.

4. The crowd began to applaud.

5. In a moment he had pulled Mr. Weasley and Mr. Malfoy apart.

 

Exercise 5. Answer the following questions:

1. What are the names of Ron’s brothers? What do they do?

2. What is the name of Ron’s broomstick?

3. What’s the name of the shop where Harry got out travelling with the help of Floo Powder? What street was it in?

4. What was written in the letters from Hogwarts Harry and Ron got?

5. What shops did Harry and his friends visit in Diagon Alley?

 

Exercise 6. Grammar revision.

“It” as a subject of the sentence.

State the nature of “it” in the following sentences.

1. It was the fact that everybody there seemed to like him.

2. It was surrounded by trees that blocked it from view of the village below.

3. Of course, it was only in the wizarding world that he had money.

4. “It’s not my fault”, retorted Draco.

5. “It can’t be Harry Potter?”

6. It’s too crowded in here, let’s go outside.

7. But it was a subdued group that headed back to the fireside in the Leaky Cauldron, where Happy, the Weasleys, and all their shopping would be travelling back to the Burrow using Floo powder.

 

Exercise 7.

Make up the situation to illustrate the following proverb:

Don’t go biting off more than you can chew.
