3. Dobby dissolved again into wails of gratitude.

Exercise 6.

Find the examples of metaphor, simile and hyperbole in Chapters 1 and 2.

Simile: a kind of comparison in which two things are com­pared be­cause they have something in common though they are in all other respects different. The imagina­tive compa­rison is explicitly made with the help of like or as.

She walks like an angel. / I wandered lonely as a cloud. (Wordsworth)

Metaphor: a comparison between two things which are basically quite different without using the words like or as. While a simile only says that one thing is like another, a metaphor says that one thing is another.

All the world’s a stage / And all the men and women merely players... (Shakespeare)

Life’s but a walking shadow... (Shakespeare Macbeth)

Hyperbole A figure of speech in which the author over exaggerates to accomplish some purpose.

" I sat mindless and eternal on the kitchen floor, stony of head, and solemn." Annie Dillard "A murder so mysterious, and so perplexing in all its particulars, was never before committed at all.
"The dustbin used to be crammed full by midday, and the floor was normally an inch deep in a compost of trampled food." George Orwell

3. Lower and lower went the flying car.

4. Mrs. Weasley was marching across the yard, scattering the chickens, and for a short, plump, kind-faced woman, it was remarkable how much she looked like a saber-toothed tiger.

5. “You could have died, you could have been seen, you could have lost your father his job”.

1. Валіза поволі, сантиметр за сантиметром, пролазила крізь вікно.

2. На обрії зі сходу проступило бліде рожеве сяйво.

3. Поміж деревами вже виднів краєчок червоного сонця.

4. Тієї миті в кухні з’явилась маленька руда постать у довгій нічній сорочечці, почувся тихенький зойк і постать мерщій вибігла.

5. Хлопці вислизнули з кухні і майнули вузеньким коридором до перекошених східців, що зигзагом здіймались вгору.

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

1. Harry ran very quickly around his room, collecting his things and passing them out of the window to Ron.

Exercise 6. Grammar revision.

Point out two-member sentences (say whether they are complete or elliptical) and one-member sentence. Find some examples of different types of simple sentences in the chapter under consideration.

1) Someone’s idea of joke.

2) Fred laughed.

3) Four or five chimneys were perched on the top of the red roof.

4) No problem.

5) “Who’s Errol?” “Our owl. He’s ancient.”
