The Duelling Club

 

Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

6) a shrewd and calculating look;

Exercise 2. Translate the sentences from English into Russian /Ukrainian.

1. There was a clunk, a splash and a gasp from within the stall and he saw Hermione’s eye peering through the keyhole.

2. Conjuring up portable, waterproof fires was a speciality of Hermione’s.

3. If he doesn’t stop trying to save your life he’s going to kill you.

4. Meanwhile, hidden from the teachers, a roaring trade in talismans, amulets, and other protective devices was sweeping the school.

5. Harry arranged his face into what he hoped was a puzzled expression.

 

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English.

1. Юрба відступила, звільняючи їм місце.

2. Але до ранку невеличкий снігопад, який почався вночі, перетворився на таку хуртовину, що останній у семестрі урок гербології скасували.

3. Гаррі був такий розлючений, що йшов коридором наосліп, навіть не помічаючи, куди прямує.

4. Десь посередині коридору Гаррі раптом полетів сторч головою, зачепившись за щось на підлозі.

5. Гаррі міг би втекти, й ніхто б не довідався, що він тут був.

 

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

1. As Harry passed the library, Percy Weasley strolled out of it, looking in far better mood than last time they’d met.

2. He was in such a bad temper after the Quidditch match, he took it out on Colin.

3. The air was suddenly thick with gossips and suspicion.

4. Harry’s Swelling Solution was far too runny, but he thought about more important things.

5. Gilderoy Lockhart was walking onto the stage, impressive in robes of deep plum and accompanied by none other that Snape, wearing his usual black.

 

Exercise 5. Answer the following questions:

1. What did Harry throw in Goyle’s cauldron during the Potions class?

2. What person is called a Parselmouth?

3. What was the safest place to hide the Polyjuice Potion?

4. Where did Potions lessons take place?

5. What is a Duelling Club?

Exercise 6.

Find out the difference in the usage of the following verbs. Give the examples of their usage from the Chapter and of your own. Use English-English dictionary:
