Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

Exercise 2. Translate the sentences from English into Russian /Ukrainian.

1. Now that Filch had stopped shouting, they could hear Myrtle’s wails echoing off the bathroom walls.

2. There wasn’t the faintest trace of writing on any of the pages, not even Auntie Mabel’s birthday, or dentist, half-past three.

3. But Harry could tell from the arrested look on Hermione’s face that she was thinking what he was thinking.

4. Gilderoy Lockhart seemed to think he himself had made the attack stop.

5. It wasn’t until they had reached Professor Flitwick’s class that Harry notices something rather odd about Riddle’s diary.

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English.

1. Біля свічки читав листа зморшкуватий, кволий і лисий, якщо не враховувати кількох пасом сивого волосся, чарівник.

2. Це був не хто інший, як молодший на п’ятдесят років Дамблдор.

3. Він був розчарований тим, що Редл завів його не в якийсь прихований перехід, а саме у той підвал, де відбувалися Снейпові уроки зілля й настійок.

4. Усе довкола закружляло, і настала темрява.

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

1. I wish I knew why someone did try to throw it away.

2. Harry could tell from the excited look on Hermione’s face that she was thinking what he was thinking.

3. Perhaps the Heir of Slytherin had lost his or her temper, though Harry.

4. This was partly because he didn’t think he could bear Fred and George singing, and partly because he wanted to examine Riddle’s diary again.

5. The door behind the large boy slammed open with such force it knocked him into the wall opposite.

Exercise 5. Answer the following questions:

Exercise 6.

Grammar revision

Gerund.

Point out the Gerund and Gerundial Constructions. State their functions. Translate them into Russian / Ukrainian.

1. … Madam Pomfrey took out her curtains again and placed them around Hermione’s bed, to spare her shame of being seen with a furry face.

2. And some old witch in Bath had a book you could never stop reading.

3. I wouldn’t mind knowing how Riddle got an award for special service to Hogwarts either.

4. Well, what if Riddle got his special award for catching the heir of Slytherin.

5. I have taken the liberty of arranging this little surprise for you all.
