1.2 Creating the WBS

Some project managers would recommend to continue break down each work until it cannot be broken down anymore.

a continual decomposition of any activity, as it eventually leads to units of work that are too small and unmanageable tasks.

A rule, find an acceptable amount of time that will serve as the smallest increment of work.

l with a small project you may only break work down into days.

l With a larger project you may choose to break work down into weeks.

1.2 Creating the WBS

In addition to the WBS chart, a WBS dictionary is created.

A WBS dictionary is a document that describes detailed information about each WBS item.

1.3 Scope Verification

Scope verification involves formal acceptance of the completed project scope by stakeholders.

This acceptance is often achieved by a customer inspection and then sign-off on key deliverables.

1.3 Scope Verification

The main inputs for scope verification are:

l Project scope statement,

l WBS,

l WBS dictionary, and

l Deliverables.

The outputs of scope verification are:

l Accepted deliverables,

l Requested changes, and

l Recommended corrective actions.

2 Time Planning

Many projects are failures in terms of meeting scope, time, and cost projections.

Managers often cite delivering projects on time as one of their biggest challenges and the main cause of conflict.

Time is also the one variable that has the least amount of flexibility. Time passes no matter what happens on a project.

2.1 Activity Definition

An activity or task is an element of work normally found on the work breakdown structure (WBS) that has an expected duration, a cost, and resource requirements.

Inputs for activity definition are:

l Scope statement,

l WBS,

l WBS dictionary

l The main outputs of this step are

l an activity list,

l activity attributes,

l milestone list, and
