Critical path method helps to combat project schedule overruns.

A critical path for a project is the series of activities that determine the earliest time by which the project can be completed.

2.5 Schedule Development

There are normally several tasks done in parallel on projects, and most projects have multiple paths through a network diagram.

Critical path the longest path through the network diagram and has the least amount of slack or float.

Slack or float is the amount of time an activity may be delayed without delaying a succeeding activity or the project finish date.

2.5 Schedule Development

Free slack or free float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the early start date of any immediately following activities.

Total slack or total float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed from its early start without delaying the planned project finish date.

2.5 Schedule Development

Project Constraints: A project manager may wish to enforce “artificial constraints” based on circumstances outside of the project itself.

Whenever possible, avoid using specific dates for tasks unless it is absolutely required.

The reason for avoiding date constraints is signifying a certain task must happen on a specific date regardless of the completion of tasks before or after it.

2.5 Schedule Development

There are three types of date constraints:

l No earlier than This constraint specifies that a task may happen any time after a specific date, but not earlier than the given date.

l No later than This constraint is a deadline oriented. The task must be completed by this date.

l On this date This constraint is the most time orientated. The task must be completed on this date, no sooner or later.

2.5 Schedule Development

Schedules Calculation

l The entries in the activity node describe the time-related properties of the activity:

l Expected duration (E)

l Calculated values (ES, EF, LS, LF)

l Slack

l Lag variable
