If people observe nature it can tell them many interesting and useful things.

Do you know that thanks to observing nature you can forecast weather? “How?” you may ask. By watching birds and animals, insects and flowers. It is known that some insects become more troublesome before a change in the weather. Flies and mosquitoes, for example, begin to hum and bite before the rain. Big blue-black beetles fly only in the evenings before nice weather.

You should know that the smell of flowers in the gardens and in the parks is very strong before it rains. Flowers have much sweet nectar before rain and the nectar is good food for insects. So if you see insects flying over flowers in large numbers you should know that it may rain soon.

Birds and animals also help to forecast weather. Birds fly lower than usual before it rains. If you happen to see a bird hiding its head under its wing, it means that soon it will become colder.

Even your cat can tell you what the weather will be like. The cat washing behind the ears is telling you about the coming rain. Look at the sky and it will tell you about the weather too.

Evening Red and Morning Grey

Evening red and morning grey

Help the traveller on his way;

Evening grey and morning red

Bring down rain upon our head.

This poem helps us to learn what the weather will be like. When the sun shines brightly, and the sky is red in the west, there are no clouds for a long distance to the west, and the atmosphere lets the red rays of sunlight pass better than blue ones. The weather usually comes from the west. So it shows that the weather will be good and dry. If the next night is clear, and if the upper air is dry, there will be fog. This makes the “morning grey”.

So both “evening red” and “morning grey” show clear dry weather, which “helps the traveller on his way”.

Rainbow in the Morning.

Rainbow in the morning, sailors take warnings;

Rainbow at night, sailor’s delight.

This old poem tells a weather truth. The sun shining from the east in the morning throws the rainbow on raining clouds in the west, from where rains usually come. That’s why it is possible that bad weather is near, and the sailors who see the morning rainbow know that they will soon have rain.

When Geese Fly South

If geese fly south too early do not think that we shall have an early winter. Usually the geese fly south before their summer home country is covered with snow.

In some seasons the geese come to their summer home country earlier and the goslings grow up quickly and are strong enough to fly south with their parents. That is why geese leave their summer home country earlier than usual.

If you want to forecast weather, you must know something about winds too.

The South wind brings wet weather,

The North wind is wet and cold together,

The West wind always brings us rain,

The East wind blows it back again.

Study nature, observe it and you’ll understand that it needs your love and protection.
