1. How about going to the cinema?

Exercise 1. Reword the following suggestions according to Speech Pattern 1.

1. Let’s buy a new bookcase. 2. Let’s go for a walk. 3. Let’s stay at home tonight. 4. Let’s send Mike a telegram. 5. Let’s have a little rest.

Exercise 2. Answer the questions using Speech Pattern 2.

1. Do you like to dance till late at night? 2. Do you like to go to the country on a cold day? 3. Do you like to go skiing in the evening? 4. Do you like to listen to modern music? 5. Do you like to explain things to your little sister or brother? 6. Do you like to write exercises on the blackboard? 7. Do you like to get up early? 8. Do you like to talk to your uncles or aunts? 9. Exercise 3. Answer the questions using the given suggestions.

A. Example: When does it often rain? (autumn)

It often rains in autumn.

1. When does it often snow? (winter)

2. When does it often freeze? (January)

3. When does it often thaw? (April)

4. When does it often hail? (summer)

5. When does it often drizzle? (October)

B. Example: When is it often cold? (winter)

It’s often cold in winter.

5. When is it often muddy? (November)

Exercise 4. Extend the statements using the given suggestions.

Example: Put on your coat. (cold)

Put on your coat, because it’s cold.

1. Open the window. (stuffy)

2. Switch on the light. (dark)

3. You mustn’t go out. (very wet)

4. Hurry up. (late)

5. Be careful crossing the road. (slippery)

6. We can’t walk there. (too far)

7. Don’t turn on the reading-lamp. (still light)

8. I can’t see anything. (very dark)

Exercise 5. Answer the questions using the given suggestions.

Example: Why don’t you go skating? (snow)

Because it’s snowing.

1. Why didn’t she go for a walk yesterday? (rain)

2. Why don’t you take your little son to the country? (freeze)

3. Why didn’t they go skating on Sunday? (thaw)

4. Why don’t you go to the lake? (hail)

Exercise 6. Change the sentences according to the example.

Example: There was a lot of sun in the afternoon.

It was sunny in the afternoon.

1. There was a heavy frost last night.

2. There was a sharp wind yesterday.

3. There were many clouds in the sky in the morning.

4. There was much rain last summer.

5. There was much dust on the road.

6. There was a thick fog on Monday.

7. There is much mud in the street.

Exercise 7. Translate into English.

1. Как насчет того, чтобы сходить искупаться? Сегодня очень жарко. 2. Не читай ей этот рассказ. Это не доставит ей удовольствия. 3. Я хочу обсудить с тобой этот вопрос. Как насчет чашечки кофе? 4. Я не люблю слушать радио. Как насчет фильма по телевизору? Это интереснее. 5. Утренняя зарядка часто доставляет мне удовольствие, потому что чувствуешь себя здоровым и полным энергии. 6. Иногда в этих краях идет снег. 7. Не снимай пальто. Здесь холодно. Может, выпьем чашечку горячего чая?
