Model (A). Questions:

Where does it take place? What time of the year is it held? Why is it held?

Text (a): The Albuquerque Pow-Wow is a celebration of the Indian way of life and it takes place in New Mexico. Thousands of people sing and dance and represent their tribes and at the end of the event the best dancers win prizes. People can listen to the musical rhythms of Native American culture and for anyone who’s hungry there are food stalls with treats such as enchiladas, bannock or tostados. Visitors to the Pow-Wow think it’s a magnificent celebration and one of the most colourful and entertaining events in the USA.

Text (b): Ivan Kupala Day is celebrated all over Russia and takes place usually on 7th July. It is held to celebrate the holiday of St John the Baptist (Ivan Kupala) and it is still very popular today with young Russians. Everything about the celebration relates to water. On the evening before called Tvorila night, children have playful water fights and throw buckets of water all over each other.

Some people consider Ivan Kupala day to be the first day of the swimming season and if the water is warm enough, boys and girls often swim happily in rivers and lakes until late at night. Girls like to float candles and delicate flowers in the hope that it will bring them happy marriages.

In the past, young people used to burn fires and jump joyfully over them holding hands. There is also a belief that on the eve of Ivan Kupala magical herbs can be found in the forests. In villages all over the country, people look forward to Ivan Kupala Day enthusiastically. It is an ancient celebration which continues to be fun for all family members whatever their ages.

Text (c): La Tomatina. Held in Bunol (Spain) on the last Wednesday in August, near Valencia, this amounts to the biggest food fight in the world. It is a free-for-all event involving 110,000 kilos of tomatoes and any person who wants to throw them. The origin of this festival depends on the perspective. It was either a bizarre political response in 1945 to Franco’s dictatorship; or a chance occurrence after a lorry-load of tomatoes spilled onto the streets of Bunol around the same time. Whichever is the truth, it is probably one of the most fun activities for the people of the town to have without the law getting involved.

Text (d): The International Snow, Ice and Fire Festival. This festival takes place in Russia, every year. It is held in February and it lasts for a week. There are sculpting contests in ice and snow and people come from all over the world to take part. There is also a varied programme of entertainment for the spectators.

Text (e): The Peel Deep takes place every New Year’s Day on the Isle of Man. About 200 people jump into the freezing waters of the Irish Sea to raise money for charity. The dip attracts people of all ages. All the swimmers get a medal and a certificate.

Text (f): The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Competition is held in Gloucester every year in May. Contestants stand at the top of a very steep hill. A huge cheese is rolled down, and the contestants have to chase it down the hill. Nobody ever manages to catch the cheese, but the person who gets to the bottom first is the winner, and keeps the cheese as a prize.

Text (g): The Bognor Birdman Competition takes place in Bognor Regis in May. Competitors build strange homemade flying machines or wear unusual costumes and try to ‘fly’ of the pier. The person who flies the furthest wins a large cash prize. Many of the fliers take part to raise money for charity. As many as 40,000 spectators watch the competition every year.

Model (B): Read the texts again and say which festival:

1 involves wearing special clothes and building strange machines

2 involves a strange use of vegetables

3 collects money to help people

4 presents food as a prize

5 brings a hope to happy marriages

6 demonstrates the tribes way of life

7 shows the speed is important

8 has an unclear origin

9 involves a lot of singing and dancing

10 involves participating in sculpture contests

11 involves men only
