1. Open the brackets.

Present Continuous

Yesterday afternoon we (to play football) at the stadium. 9. On Friday morning I (to make) an experiment. 10. We (to discuss) many problems.

Future Continuous

1. I (to watch) the match on television at 7 p.m. 2. Tomorrow afternoon I (to play) tennis from 3 o'clock until 4.30. 3. We (to pack) our things from 6 to 9 this evening. 4. Jim (to study) from 8 o'clock until 10 o'clock this evening. 5. She (to sunbathe) at this time next week.

 

2. Answer the questions.

1. Do you speak French? Are you speaking French now? What language are you speaking? Does your brother speak English? 2. Do you play tennis? Are you playing tennis now? Does your friend play tennis? 3. You are answering my questions, aren't you? Do you always answer questions well? 4. Are you reading a newspaper now? Do you ever read newspapers at the lesson? 6. Are you listening to me? Do you always listen to me carefully? 7. What are you doing here? 8. Do you sing? Are you singing now? 9. Do you dance? You are not dancing now, are you? 10. Do you work hard at English? 11. Is Mike reading now? Does he read English texts well? 12. You are not doing your homework now, are you? When do you do your homework? 13. Do you smoke? Is your friend smoking now? 14. You aren't having dinner at the moment, are you? When do you have dinner?

 

3. Use the Simple Past or the Past Continuous Tense.

1. I (hear, not) the thunder during the storm last night because I (sleep). 2. It was beautiful yesterday when we went for a walk in the park. The sun (shine). A cool breeze (blow). The birds (sing). 3. My brother and sister (argue) about something when I (walk) into the room. 4. I (get) a package in the mail. When I (open) it, I (find) a surprise. 5. Stanley (climb) the stairs when he (trip) and (fall). Luckily, he (hurt, not) himself. 6. While Mrs Emerson (read) the little boy a story, he (fall) asleep, so she (close) the book and quietly (tiptoe) out of the room. 7. I really (enjoy) my vacation last January. While it (snow) in Iowa, the sun (shine) in Florida. While you (shovel) snow in Iowa, I (lie) on the beach in Florida. 8. It was my first day of class. I (find, finally) the right room. The room (be, already) full of students. On one side of the room, students (talk, busily) to each other in Spanish. Other students (speak) Japanese, and some (converse) in Arabic. It (sound) like the United Nations. Some of the students, however, (sit, just) quietly by themselves. I (choose) an empty seat in the last row and (sit) down. The traffic (make) so much noise that I couldn't hear what he (say). 19. She (stand) at the bus-stop. I asked her what bus she (wait) for. 20. When I (hear) his knock I (go) to the door and (open) it, but I (not recognize) him at first because I (not wear) my glasses.

 

4. Make sentences with "when" for these situations:

Situation: We had a lecture on art yesterday and the rector of the University came in the middle of it.

We were having a lecture on art when the rector of the University came in.

1. Mr Robinson turned the radio on and listened to the first part of the concert. Then the phone rang. 2. We were at a dance last night. In the middle of it someone shouted: "Fire!" 3. Robert drove to London yesterday. Halfway there the car broke down 4. The television programme was interesting yesterday but my friends called on me in the middle of it. 5. We had a dictation yesterday. The bell rang in the middle of it. 6. The Browns were at the dinner table when the telegram arrived. 7. Robert went to the bus-stop and waited. At that time it began to rain.
