1. An English firm has received an order for electronic equipment from a Russian company. The equipment is to be delivered by ship. Write a letter from the supplier to a packer giving full packing and marking instructions.

2. A container company has received an enquiry from an Australian exporter which has to deliver a consignment of its goods to Russia (you are to decide what kind of product is going to be shipped). Make up a letter of reply advising of the most suitable containers, freight charges, sailings and other details which may be of interest to the exporter.

FOCUS 8. Role play.

1. You are a representative of an Italian exporter of glassware. You have signed a contract with a Russian company which provide for partial shipment. The first lot of your goods was delivered a week ago, and included large numbers of broken items due to inadequate packing and insufficient marking. The damage was caused by (choose either variant):

Ø the packer’s failure to carry out your shipping and marking instructions;

Ø your company’s failure to give clear and full instructions to the packer.

Meet the packer’s representative and discuss the most effective way of settling the problem depending on the variant chosen by you.

2. Your firm has received an order for sophisticated equipment from an English company. The goods are to be delivered by train-ferry, which implies transshipment and rough handling. Meet a representative of your forwarding agents and discuss the methods of packing and marking of the goods which will prevent them from damage in transit.

FOCUS 9. Act as an interpreter.

DIALOGUE 1

-	Г-н Сандерс, мы заканчиваем выполнение Вашего заказа на поставку партии медицинских инструментов и хотели бы обсудить ряд вопросов, связанных с упаковкой товара.
-	Very well, Mr. Pirogov. What particular points do you want to discuss?

-	I see your point, Mr. Pirogov. Rough handling is inevitable and your instruments are rather fragile. I suggest enclosing cases by plywood completely and battening them firmly. Besides you should provide padding inside the cases. Solid packing and stuffing will give protection from damage in transit.

-	Certainly, proper marking is essential to secure goods. While marking the cases you should stencil special directions and warnings on them.

DIALOGUE 2

-	Mr. Erofeev, unfortunately I have to complain about inadequate marking of the consignment delivered by you under our contract.

-	Your marking was so unclear that the goods went astray and part of them got lost. Now we have to claim damages from you.

-	The container can carry a payload of 18,300 kg. As it will be sealed at your factory and transported unopened until it reaches its destination, the goods will be protected against pilfering. The container has a solid removable top, and gives protection against all elements.
-	Очень хорошо. А какие отгрузочные документы выписываются при контейнерной перевозке?
-	In your case, as the consignment is going to be loaded from lorry to ship, and then transferred again, I would suggest you use our Combined Transport Bill of Lading. It will cover your goods from point of acceptance to point of delivery.

-	Freight charges are calculated by cubic metre or tonne. Please note that we offer substantial rebates for regular shipments.
