8.1.10 CHARACTER / FOLK / ETHNIC DANCES

CHARACTERISTICS AND MOVEMENT

Character Dance pertains to dances portraying characters from traditional Ballets, Opera, Broadway style Musical Theatre, TV or Video. The range of characters is very broad and may include: The Wolf from Peter and the Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, a Bird, Dog, Cat, Flower, Butterfly, Animal, Sailor, Nurse, Religious Preacher, Pauper, Prince or Shirley Temple. Costuming, music and dance movements must be appropriate to the character being presented.

Folk Dances: These disciplines must be Traditional Dances of any Nationality, passed down from generation to generation, and may include: Polonaise, Polynesian, American Indian, Highland Fling, Japanese Candle Dance, Hindu, Tarantella, African, etc.

Traditional / authentic costuming and music is expected, and will be used in the total evaluation.

AGE DIVISIONS

Age Division is always determined by the Competitor year of birth (no matter when birthday is).

Seniors ( 50 years and over)

DANCE DISCIPLINES FOR BELLY DANCE

Oriental Classic

Dance technique based on the classical style Raks Sharqi which should include elements of Orientalfolkloric dances. The Musical accompaniment for Oriental Classic Performances must be a classical Raks Sharqi music composition with possible accompaniment of vocals and possible modern arrngements and/or variations.

It is forbidden to use acrobatic movements or lifts, and the use of any props or accessories except the veils when used during music introduction or as element of the dance costume.

MALE Dancers cannot compete in Oriental Classic discipline, at any Age Division.

Oriental Folk

Folk dance reflects the national features, traditions, habits, music, costume and history of a peoples’ society living in a particular place, region or country. It is the cultural property of all people of a given territory. Oriental folkloric dances must be performed using music of the proper nationality being represented, in the corresponding costume and must contain characteristic movements, manners, and themes of that specific folk genre.

Trance Dances are not allowed (e.g. Iraqi).

Competitors in Oriental Folkmay perform with any allowed kind of folkoric dance style, or use any of the oriental traditional props (two veils, saber, vases, knives, canes, finger cymbals, and etc.) but, Oriental Folk stage props or accessories have to belong to the particular dancing style: for example an original Shamadan (It is not allowed to switch on the candles.), sticks for Saidi, pitcher for Tunisian, etc.

Note for Children Dancers only: it is forbidden to perform in the styles of Eskandaria (Alexandrian, Melaya Leff), Shamadan and ritual movements.

Children MALE Dancers, can perform only as part of Group and/or Formation.

Oriental Show

Choreography must include show elements, defined theme, development of the plot and structure; dance Technique must not incorporate any other form of dance than Oriental Dance and/or Folk original technique.

It is allowed to use any props, appropriate accessories and any type of costume. Stage props and scenery may be used if the competitors themselves put the objects in place during a single visit to the stage and remove them without the help of non-performers. Time limit for Scenic props installations are: 15 seconds for Solo, Duo, Small Group; 30 seconds for Formation.

Musical accompaniment for Oriental Show can be any kind of music.


Competitors in Oriental Show should always provide the Organizer the title of their performance.

Children MaleDancers, can perform only as part of Group and/or Formation.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

4.1 Dancer’s Dues

In Duo, Small Group and Formation categories all dancers have to stay on the dance floor during the whole performance from the beginning of composition until the end.

It is always forbidden to use any open flame, liquids or other substances that may leave the floor wet, damage the stage surface or make it unsafe. It is forbidden to use live animals as well as engine powered machines.

In Oriental Classic Solo, Youth and Adult 1 Division ONLY, Competitors must dance in their Final stage wearing a new costume and performing a new choreography (“new” means different from the other/s used in the current competition).

Choreography Guidelines

In any Category/Division ONLY oriental and oriental folkloric dance techniques (or combinations between them) are allowed. Contaminations from other dance techniques are NOT allowed. It is forbidden for a dancer to continuously execute the same step or figure (drum solo, head windmill, any kind of shimmy, any kind of turn, etc…) for more than 8 bar. In Children Division, this limit is 4 bar.

In any Duo/Small Group/Formation Performances, a SOLO dance is allowed when it is no longer than 4 Bars and, ALL dancers have to stay on the floor during the whole performance.

Acrobatic passages or lifts are always NOT ALLOWED.

Organizer Guidelines

Organizer should also ensure that dancefloor is always kept clean; in the Official Schedule, at least 15 minutes break should be provided between each Round in order to make the dancers able to eventually change their dress (Oriental Classic). Organizer should provide Youth and Adult 1 Oriental Classic Solo video recording in order to check the rules have been followed (mandatory dress and choreography change). Organizer should also ansure that Moderator introduces every Dancer by Number and Name during compulsory music selections and each choreography by Number (Name in the event of Solo) and Performance Title in the event of own music performance.

 

MUSIC

General

For all Disciplines/Categories/Divisions, in the event of own music overtime, DJ should fade out the music within the following 5 seconds exceeding the highest limit shown in the rules.

During Oriental Classic Preliminary Rounds the compulsory music is changed for each heat to ensure Competitors have the same opportunity.

In Oriental Classic, Children Division only, all categories, own music should not be accompained by vocals.

IMPORTANT NOTE

In Oriental Classic Discipline, in the event the 1/4 Final passage is the first round of the Competition, it shall be considered as Preliminary Round and performers have to follow proper procedure and time limits as per above table. If Competition will start from 1/8 Final, in the 1/4 Final passage dancers will be perform with own music.

6 DRESS & MAKE UP CODE

General Provisions for Make Up

Make up must be age-appropriate and complementary to the choreography theme as well as described in the General Section. CHILDREN may only use very light color around the eyes and lipstick. MALE Dancers are allowed to use make up in the Oriental Show only.

General Provisions for Costumes

Trousers or skirts must not be made in transparent material; skin colour material is not allowed; private body parts have to be completely covered as per following pictures.

 

A. In Oriental Classic the costume design must be inspired by the Raqs Sharqi tradition. Skirts may be closed or may have one or two slits; legs can be showd till the half of the thigh maximum. For Children Categories, the upper limit is the knee height. Skirts must be weared not lower than the hand is positioned horizontally from the navel (see picture).

 

 
 

 

 


In Children Categories costume may consist of traditional or stylized top over a tricot (integral costume) without alter natural body proportions of dancer. Children may also wear trousers or a long skirt, provided the above limitations are met. Finally, Children have to be dressed to the elbow and to the knees, at least.

B. In Oriental Folk is mandatory to wear costumes appropriated and pertinent to dance style the Dancer is going to perform.

C. In Oriental Show any kind of dress may be used in accordance with above general provisions.

Menswear costume must always include at least trousers (not trasparent) with a sash, a top or a gillet or a shirt (also open). Shoes are mandatory.

Competitors can dance barefoot or with footwear such us a sandals and shoes (less than 1,5 cm heels shoes, excluded Alexandrian dances, for Oriental Classic and Folk; any kind of shoes for Oriental Show).
