На десятом отделении скопилось, естественно, больше всего политических - примерно 35-40 человек из пятидесяти пяти. Большую часть из них составляли "побегушники" - ребята, пытавшиеся удрать из СССР. Какими только способами не пытались они бежать из любимого отечества', и вплавь, на резиновых лодках, в аквалангах под водой, по воздуху на самодельных вертолетах, планерах и ракетах, пешком через границу, в трюмах пароходов и под товарными вагонами. Буквально не могу придумать такой способ, который не был бы уже использован. И все они, разумеется, были невменяемыми - потому что какой же нормальный человек захочет бежать теперь, когда наконец-то, после всех ошибок, стали вырисовываться контуры коммунизма! Некоторым удавалось благополучно пройти границу, но их выдавали назад. Со мной рядом спал парень по прозвищу Хохол - старый уголовник, полжизни просидевший по лагерям. На все расспросы следователя о причинах, толкнувших его бежать из страны, он говорил: “Так какая вам разница, гражданин начальник? Я же ведь плохой, преступник, рецидивист. Чего же вы меня держите, не пускаете? Я здесь хорошую жизнь порчу, так зачем я вам нужен! Пусть гады-капиталисты со мной мучаются!” Конечно, от такого опасного бреда ему предстояло принудительно излечиться.

Exercise 4. Find the basis for irony in the given examples and translate them into Russian.

1. I did not see Strickland for several weeks. I was disgusted with him, and if I had had an opportunity I should have been glad to tell him so, but I saw no object in seeking him out for the purpose.

2. Dick Stroeve flattered himself on his skill in cooking Italian dishes, and I confess that his spaghetti were very much better than his pictures.

3. His life was a tragedy written in the terms of a knock-about farce.

4. A photograph could not have been more exact than his pictures to look at which you would have thought that Monet, Manet, and the rest of the Impressionists had never been.

5. She was making money but she could not get over the idea that to earn her living was somewhat undignified, and she was inclined to remind you that she was a lady by birth.

6. The women were too nice to be well-dressed, and too sure of their position to be amusing.

8. It was the kind of the party which makes you wonder why the hostess has troubled to bid her guests, and why the guests have troubled to come.

9. I used to listen with astonishment to the stinging humour with which they would tear a brother-author to pieces the moment that his back was turned.
