Teacher (T): Good morning. I’m glad to see you. Hope you are well. Today we are going to speak about different kinds of sports, sport competitions, your likes and dislikes about sports, besides we’ll revise tense forms of the verb and practise tag questions.

T: You are ready to start the lesson, aren’t you? Well, so we’ll begin. Look at the pictures and match them with names of sports which are on the poster. Which sports aren’t shown? Which sports aren’t written?

1) basketball football tennis baseball

2) judo volleyball boxing wrestling

3) motor-racing cycling skiing roller-skating

4) swimming sailing wind-surfing jogging

Т: Which sports are different from the other three in each group? There can be more than one possible answer, so discuss all of them with your partner. Turn to each other and start working.

T: Are you ready? Which word is odd in the first line? Sasha and Masha? Why? Any other explanations?

1) Tennis is odd because can be played against one other person, is not a team game;

2) Volleyball – isn’t fighting; is a team game;

3) Skiing – is a winter sport;

4) Jogging – is not a water sport.

T: Look at the pictures:

T: You are going to interview each other using the questions in the handouts. Look at them. Are there any unknown words? Don’t hesitate to ask. Then you will present your partner so we’ll find out how sporty you are.

  You Your partner
Do you play any sport? What?
Do you prefer team or individual sports? Why?
What sport are you good at?
Do you have much training? How often?
Do you take part in sport competitions?
Do you follow any sports as a spectator?
What sport would you like to learn?

T: Are you ready? Well done. Get ready to present your partner.

Pay attention to the verb form. Listen to my story.

e.g. Sasha plays many sports. He plays football, goes swimming and he likes roller-skating. He prefers team sports because he likes playing with his friends. Sasha is good at roller-skating. He has much training two times a week. He often t akes part in sport competitions. He likes watching football matches and competitions in boxing. He would like to learn how to play chess.

T: Who will try? Who wants to be the first?

Well done! What about your partner, Natasha? Etc.

T: You are really sporty. You have got many sport competitions at school, haven’t you?

Ps: Yes, we have.

T: You went to see a football match yesterday, didn’t you?

Ps: No, we didn’t.

T: No? When did you go?

Ps: Last Friday.

T: The match was between our school team and team of school number 5, wasn’t it?

Ps: Yes, it was.

T: I knew it. They played at the stadium of school number 5, didn’t they?

Ps: No, they didn’t.

T: No? Where did they play?

Ps: At our stadium.

T: There were many spectators, weren’t there?

Ps: Yes, there were.

T: You went with your parents, didn’t you?

Ps: No, we didn’t.

T: Who did you go with?

Ps: With our classmates.

T: The game was exciting, wasn’t it?

Ps: Yes, it was.

T: Our players won the game, didn’t they?

Ps: Yes, they did.

T: They played better, didn’t they?

Ps: Yes, they did.

T: You had a really great time, didn’t you?

Ps: Yes, we did.

T: Well done! Did you pay attention that we have affirmative sentence in the first part of tag questions. The question is made in the second part. I’ve prepared handouts for you but my computer didn’t print tags. So your task is to complete the questions. Which are the auxiliary verbs? Work in pairs, ask and answer.

You went to see a football match yesterday, ……………?

The match was between our school team and team of school number 5, ……………………….?

They played at the stadium of school number 5, …………….?

There were many spectators,…………………..?

You went with your classmates, ………….……….?

The game was exciting, ……………………….?

Our players won the game,…….. ……………..?

They played better,…………………………..?

You had a really great time, …………………?

T: I know you had competitions in basketball, volleyball, chess and table tennis. Prepare short reports for our school radio about these competitions. You can use your handouts. Start like this: Last Monday we had a competition in …………

T: Who will try? Who wants to be the first?

Well done! What about you, Lilya? Etc.

T: One more activity – look at the blackboard. There is a table there. In the first row you see kinds of sport but the last box is empty. Later I’ll say why. Our task is to rank sports according to the following characteristics. Do you know what they mean? We will fill this table with numbers from 1 to 5 according to their importance. Which of these sports is the most popular? Which is on the second place etc.? Which requires the most special skills, long time of training etc.? Which is the most dangerous for life/health? Why? Etc.

sports   popular requires special skills and equipment dangerous for health/life exciting
chess   2/3
football       1/2
swimming
parachuting
skateboarding   2/3   1/2

T: And now put your favourite kind of sport into the sixth line and tell us about it. Do you think it is popular? What place would you put it on? Etc.

Tell your partner about your favourite kind of sport. The chart and the following text with blanks on the poster will help you.

My favourite kind of sport is………….. It is (not) ………..and / but lots of people like watching it. It requires/doesn’t require………….and long hours of training. …………can/cannot be ………………as you can/cannot hurt yourself.. This kind of sport is/isn’t very ………….. – it is fast and fun and keeps you fit. Also, it is very beautiful to watch.

Listen to my story first:

My favourite kind of sport is figure skating. It is not so popular but lots of people like watching it. It requires special skills and equipment and long hours of training. It is on the third place in our table. Figure skating can be dangerous for health as you can fall and hurt yourself. Place 3 or 4 in the chart. This kind of sport is very exciting – it is fast and fun and keeps you fit and it is very beautiful to watch. The first place in the table.

T: Well. Turn to each other and start working. Help your partner.

T: Nice work! Well done!

T: Your homework for the next lesson is:

- interview one of your relatives or friends and present him or her the next lesson;

- be ready to speak about last sports competitions which took place in our school, your favourite kind of sport.

T: Our lesson is coming to the end. I’m happy to say we’ve done much work. You worked hard and now your marks. Nina, …., … and …. were very active at the lesson. They get … Oleg, …, and …made some mistakes. They get …..Thank you for your work. See you next time.
