12. 2. 1 The quantity and arrangement of marshalling stations within the terminal shall be determined according to traffic flow rate, traffic flow nature and direction, conditions for approach lines and the work division of marshalling in railway network while considering local conditions through overall comparison and selection.

Marshalling stations within the terminal should be established in a centralized manner. In newly-built terminal or the terminal mainly for transit train flow in railway network,it shall set one marshalling station.

Under special conditions, it may set two or more marshalling station in the terminal through technical and economic comparison,if one of the following conditions is satisfied:

1 There is a large quantity of transit and remarshalling traffic flow in the railway network, and also a large quantity of local traffic flow for centralized receiving and departure in industrial area and harbour area.

2 The approach lines are converged in two or more places which are far away from each other, while there are certain quantities of angular wagon flow and local traffic flow in the converged places, and it is beneficial to handle sorting and marshalling operation in different places.

3 The terminal range is large, introduced line is numerous, industrial enterprise distribution is scattered and the volume of local operations is large.

If there is a station within the terminal to handle a lot of wagon loading and unloading operations, it shall strengthen its equipment as required by organization of through transport.

12. 2. 2 Where there are two or more marshalling stations set in a terminal, the operation volume and nature in each marshalling station shall be determined according to the work division of the marshalling station in railway network, traffic flow nature and locomotive routing, etc., through technical and economic comparisons while considering the following conditions:

1 All the transit and resorting operations are handled in a main marshalling station in
a centralized manner, while the hump shunting operations for the angular traffic flow on the
tracks connected with other marshalling stations within the terminal are handled in
marshalling stations respectively.

2 According to work division by directional traffic, marshalling station undertakes
the sorting operations for the traffic flow to the terminal on the tracks connected with the
marshalling station. Under individual condition,it undertakes parts of resorting operations
for the traffic flow dispatched to the tracks connected with the marshalling station.

3 According to work division by leading line, marshalling station undertakes the
sorting operations for the traffic flow to/from the terminal on the tracks connected with the
marshalling station.

4 In comprehensive work division, marshalling station usually makes work division
by connected lines or running directions, at the same time, most of the transshipment and
hump shunting operations are concentrated in main marshalling station.

12. 2. 3 Location of newly-built marshalling station shall be selected by following requirements:

1 It should be set out of the urban area as specified in urban planning.

2 It should be set on the line of major traffic flow direction in a place where lines are converged.

3 It considers both far and near period to meet the demands of operations on the
introduced lines within design year,which reserves margin for further development.

4 For the marshalling station mainly to provide service to transit and remarshalling operations, its location shall ensure that the traffic flow on most main lines is to pass through the terminal on the shortest route. The marshalling station dealing with transshipment wagon and local traffic flow operations, its location shall consider the straightness of transit wagon flow and convenience to angular wagon flow, to offer shorter running distance for the transfer trains in the district to be served. The marshalling station providing service to local wagon flow hump shunting operations shall be set in the line converging place nearby main industrial area or port area. 12. 2. 4 Operations for passing trains should be handled in marshalling station. If there are a lot of passing trains that do not need to enter into marshalling station for operation,it may set a separate station,the location of which should be near to the marshalling station to share locomotive operation equipment.
