Bad habits that leave you exhausted. Don't let these nine energy zappers sabotage your work productivity. See nine things that zap your vitality and how to get it back

1.Energy Zapper #1: Being Addicted to E-mail

Isn't being wired to the hilt--e-mail, voice mail, IM, BlackBerry--supposed to boost productivity, freeing up your energy? More often, the opposite is true. If you continually halt what you're doing to answer e-mail, check voice mail, and attend to a thousand other beeps and blips, your attention becomes diluted, which leaves you feeling depleted.

Energy Fix. Switch off electronic gadgets during your most productive work hours, which for most people tend to be in the morning. If something pops into your mind that you need to remember--write it down and take care of it later.

2.Energy Zapper #2: Visual Clutter

We may be used to living in enclosed spaces with lots of stuff--a refrigerator door packed with artwork, a countertop laden with mail, a desk that's little more than a shifting pile of folders and paper--but it's not how we're meant to live. "Clutter signals disorder, which makes us anxious. Our brains sense that anxiety."

Energy Fix.Do your best to clear visual clutter, so when you look around, your eyes can "rest" rather than dart from mess to mess.

3.Energy Zapper #3: Being Bored

Ever sat around for an hour or more not tackling a chore or work because it's just so darned monotonous? Mental foot-dragging, boredom and lack of motivation are draining. Put simply, we like to see results, and getting things done gives us a mental energy boost.

Energy Fix.Find a partner for encouragement or promise yourself motivational rewards for completing the task at hand.

4.Energy Zapper #4: Poor Posture

You already know that not sitting or standing straight is bad for your body. But all that hunching over a computer screen or cradling a phone on your shoulder wreaks havoc on your energy level. Your muscles contract, and blood flow is impaired, which limits the amount of oxygen to your brain.

Energy Fix.Sit up straight! Your legs should be at right angles to the floor, your arms at right angles to your keyboard. Be conscious of keeping your shoulders down, not up near your ears. Adjust your computer screen so your eyes gaze at the middle of it. And don't just sit there--if you have to, set a timer to go off hourly to remind you to get up, stretch and get a drink of water. When you get back to your desk, do a quick posture check: Shoulders down! (Reboot your posture with these tips.)

5.Energy Zapper #5: Toxic Indoor Air

Humming copy machines. Cleaning products. Dry-cleaning chemicals. Synthetic carpeting. Even the desks in your office may be contributing to the load of toxins you breathe each day, because all of them release chemicals into the air.

Energy Fix.Get outside. If you're feeling tired, go out for 10 minutes to breathe fresh air. Indoors, cultivate houseplants, which are remarkably good at absorbing toxins. And don't wear shoes inside the house--you're dragging not just dirt indoors on your soles, but pesticides and other harmful chemicals too.

6.Energy Zapper #6: Eating Too Much at Once

Consuming a big meal is always something that will cause a dip in energy later. You fill up on a carb- and calorie-rich lunch and, as nutrients are absorbed by your body, excess glucose is dumped into your bloodstream, and your body releases insulin to process all that sugar.

Energy Fix.Eat every four hours, instead of the usual six. Try to brownbag more often than eating out, if you buy takeout or dine in a restaurant, you're likely to eat more. Drink liquids (water, tea) all day, dehydration makes you tired, too

7.Energy Zapper #7: Living in Artificial Light

Our natural body rhythms are keyed to the rising and setting of the sun. Seeing sunlight during the day gives your brain a boost. So if you are awake before the sun, and/or don't see much sun all day, your body is experiencing something a lot like jet lag.

Energy Fix. Instead of hitting the coffee cart when you're flagging, hit the sidewalk--the combination of physical exercise and a shot of sunlight will energize you. You don't need much: A 10- to 20-minute walk in the sunshine will give you a boost.

8.Energy Zapper #8: Listening to Negative Tellers

You may be upbeat, but it can be exhausting to listen to complainers all day long, whether it's the fellow mom who calls to trash-talk the neighbors or the coworker who never has a positive word to say. A 2006 study at Chicago's Northwestern University found that people forced to listen to "high-maintenance" colleagues became frustrated and unfocused, and suffered a decline in the quality of their work.

Energy Fix.Insulate yourself as best you can. If a coworker loves to enumerate her complaints, cut her off with a firm but polite "I really have to get this finished," then smile and get to work. She'll get the message. If it's your own negative thoughts that drag you down, train yourself to banish them by listing, daily, the things you're grateful for, so you can pull out that list when the negative stuff intrudes.

9.Energy Zapper #9: Holding a Grudge

It takes a surprising amount of energy to remember whom you have a grudge against, and to continually update the faults, missteps and things you're mad about. Resentment is a huge drain physically as well as mentally. Anger, resentment, grudges--all of these emotions are toxic, and we hang on to them in our bodies especially in tense, tired muscles.

Energy Fix.It takes practice, but try to forgive old mistakes. An easy way to start is to simply be aware of the times negative thoughts about others creep into your mind. "Think of others as flawed humans, which we all are, which makes it easier to forgive-and free up energy.

1. Beer Flood Claims Nine Souls   On October 17, 1814, a very unfortunate beer-related incident occurred in London. A huge vat which held over 135,000 gallons of fermenting beer succumbed to the wounds of age, and let its bounty loose with explosive force. The impact caused several other vats in the same building to rupture, and almost instantly the combined 1.5 mln litres of ale crashed through the brick structure and poured into the London parish of St. Giles, a slum area.   The impact of this massive wave of beer was disastrous. Men and women were caught in the wave, tossed against walls and buried in debris. The beer completely destroyed two homes, and flooded many others. A wall at a nearby pub crumbled under the force, burying a barmaid there for several hours. Nine people were killed by the drink that day, all but one due to drowning. The ninth died of alcohol poisoning. Most of the victims were poor individuals who either lost their lives, or everything they owned.   Soon after the flood, survivors rushed in to save what they could of the precious ale, collecting it in pots, cans, and kettles. Some simply used their cupped hands to lap up the tepid pools of dirty beer.   It took weeks for the stink of beer to completely fade from the area. The brewery was later taken to court over the accident, but the entire event was determined to be an “Act of God” by the judge and jury, leaving no one responsible. 2. Sweet Horror: Great Boston Molasses Flood   On January 15, 1919, people in Boston's North End were startled by a loud rumbling noise and then a "rat-a-tat-tat" that witnesses described as sounding like a machine gun. The ground shook as if a train were passing overhead. The five-story molasses tank had come apart unleashing a wave of molasses 15 feet high and 160 feet wide. Moving at 35 miles per hour, it traveled over two blocks and engulfed everything in its path. The devastation was horrific: the buildings on the dock were flattened or swept off their foundations and crushed. The next day, the Boston Post carried a graphic account. "The sight ….is almost indescribable in words. Molasses, waist deep, covered the street and swirled and bubbled about the wreckage. …Horses died like so many flies on sticky fly paper…... Human beings — men and women — suffered likewise." The disaster killed 21 people, injured 150, and caused property damage of more than 100,000,000 in today's dollars. The tank's owners claimed that anarchists had dynamited it as a protest against the American government, but few people accepted this explanation. Other theories ascribed the explosion to overfilling and structural defects of the tank. After much legal wrangling, the production company was held liable for the damage and paid $1,000,000 in compensation to the victims of the disaster. Massachusetts and most other states responded to the verdict by passing laws to certify engineers and regulate construction. The molasses case marked the beginning of the end of an era when big business faced no government restrictions on its activities — and no consequences.

3.Australia seeks more palatable name for kangaroo steaks   SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia has launched a competition to find a new way of describing kangaroo meat which will be less offensive to diners sensitive about eating the national symbol. Organisers point out that a slice of cow or pig on a plate is called by the more palatable euphemisms of beef or pork, and they want to find a similarly savoury name for cute kangaroos.   Kangaroo meat sales have grown 50-fold in the past decade to create a 200 million dollar a year industry, with Europe a major export market for the low-fat red meat and Russians lapping it up in sausages. But Australians have been reluctant to eat an animal so closely linked to the national identity, and most kangaroo meat consumed locally is in the form of pet food.   The competition to find a new name for the meat has the support of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia. The organisers said there were more than 300 words for kangaroo and its meat in Aboriginal dialects and suggested entrants give one of those words a "sexy twist". Hundreds of names have already been put forward, including "Skippy" (the name of a favourite TV kangaroo character), "Yummy" and "Kanga" -- none of which stand a chance of success, the Australian newspaper reported. The industry's national quota for culling kangaroos is 3.9 million animals, a number described by some wildlife activists as a cruel slaughter but defended by the industry as necessary to keep down booming kangaroo populations.   4.
