Study the pronunciation:

II. Explain the following. Be ready to reproduce the situations from the text.

¨ to take all the strain

¨ to have a big reserve of smth.

¨ to wipe smth. on smth.

¨ of one’s own accord

¨ to abuse smth. (but abuse of smth.)

¨ to be out of sight

¨ a treachery of smth/sb.

¨ to break the confidence of smb.

III. Search the text for the synonyms to the following:

to join the lines together; to make a sudden upward movement; to begin; to make smb. be sure; everlastingly; to imagine / to form an impression of.

 

IV. Find in the text antonyms to the following:

to tighten; cooked/prepared by boiling or baking; fair/ reasonable; non-clutched hands

 

V. Give English equivalents from the text:

VI. Try to guess or find in the dictionary the meaning of the following expressions containing the words from the text:

¨ to tie the knot – to tie oneself in (to) knots

¨ to come to grips with smb./smth. – to get a grip on oneself

¨ to touch smb. on one’s raw

¨ to have a loosen tongue

¨ to take a person into one’s confidence

VII.Think of some two situations of encouragement for your group-mates to use phrases from tasksII-VI.

VIII. Translate into English using the vocabulary discussed:

1. Він не знав, що вона не уміє зберігати секрети, і довірився їй. 2. Він так хотів, щоб ми його супроводжували, що падав на коліна. 3. Де вони? Вони пішли ще вчора і до цих пір не повернулися. Напевно, щось сталося. - Візьми себе в руки (2 варіанти). Вони, мабуть, повернуться з хвилини на хвилину. 4. Він такий жорстокий, від нього не діждешся ні краплі жалості. До того ж він завжди і всім ставить пастки. Краще б нам від нього позбавитися. 5. Я ж просила тебе не витирати руки об брюки, коли ремонтуєш машину.

 

IX. Comment on the following:

1. «... he knew no man was ever alone in the sea».

2. «There is no sense in being anything but practical though». Does it somehow hold true with our everyday life?

X. Be ready to discuss the following:

1) Why did the old man feel humiliated when his arm was cramped, though no one witnessed it?

2) Was the old man really religious or his prayers had another meaning for him?

3) The fish was two feet longer than the skiff and the old man was absolutely alone, but it even didn’t occur to him to give up the idea of killing the fish. More than that, it made him more determined. Why?

4) Why did the author describe the episode with the hand-game?
