A. What are your symptoms?

I've lost my appetite / voice. I can't sleep.
     She's sneezing. She's coughing. She's got She's blowing She's got a
thore throat. her nose. temperature.

| B. What will the doctor do?
The doctor will take your temperature, listen to your heart and lungs – прослухає вас, look in your ears, examine you – огляне вас, feel your pulse – перевірить ваш пульс, ask you some questions, diagnose the case – поставить діагноз, prescribe some medicine – пропише ліки, see how the patient is getting on – слідкує за самопочуттям пацієнта.

| C. What's the diagnosis? Disease or illness.
You have got flu - грип / chickenpox - вітрянка / mumps - свинка / pneumonia – запалення легенів / quinsy - ангіна / bronchitis - бронхіт.

| D. What does the doctor prescribe? Treatment.
a)Take this medicine three times a day after meals.
b)Stay in bed until your temperature is normal.
c) Put mustard plasters on your chest. Покладіть гірчичники на груди.
d)Drink hot tea with honey and raspberry jam to bring down the temperature…. щоб збити температуру
e) Stay away from school or work.
f) I think you should have total bed rest for a week.
g) Be careful, because the flu is catching. Будьте обережні, тому що грип передається.
h) Take this mixture for your throat. Gargle every two hours. Приймайте цю мікстуру від горла. Полошіть кожні дві години.

| E. What might the doctor ask you?
What would you say if the doctor asked you the following questions? What do you complain of? На що скаржитесь? What is the matter with you? Що з вами? When did you manage to get it? Коли вам вдалось підцепити її?

| D. Aches and pains
Nouns: We only use ache with the following: I've got toothache (U), a stomach-ache, backache (U), earache (U) and a headache. For other parts of the body we use pain, e.g. I woke up in the night with a terrible pain in my chest.
Verbs: You can use ache for some things, e.g. my back aches; but hurt is more common to describe real pain, and it can be used with or without a direct object:
She hurt her foot when she jumped off the bus and fell over, (also injured here) or
She hurt herself when she jumped off the bus and fell over.
I hit my leg against the table and it really hurts. (= gives me a terrible pain)
Adjectives: The only common adjective is painful ( painless):
A: Did it hurt when you had your filling? (= when the dentist fills a hole/cavity in the tooth)
B: No, it was painless.
