Brief Description of Technology
The pressure pulse (up to 20 GPa) is created by passage of an electrical current pulse (with a magnitude of up to 10 MA) trough a metallic cylindrical liner, inside of which the sample under investigation (graphite, tungsten etc.) is placed.
A method for the study of the thermodynamic properties and phase transitions under high pressures and temperatures (up to 10 000 K) is being developed.
Compared to the methods of shock-loading, which require explosive substances, the offered method has several essential advantages, the most important of which are:
- long duration of the pressure pulse (40-100 micro sec, compared to 0.1-1 micro sec in the case of shock-loading), providing quasistatic loading conditions;
- opportunity to perform the investigations under laboratory conditions without the use of explosive substances.
Legal Aspects
Patent application for the method of production of artificial diamond powders has been approved in Russia.
Special Facilities in Use and Their Specifications
The high-pressure pulses are created by means of the following unique equipment, which is created by the Institute of Problems of Electrophysics of the RAS:
- an E7-25 type capacitive energy storeage device (the device was tested up to an electrical current magnitude of 10 MA and current integrals of up to 5´109 A2/s; these two parameters demonstrate the unique ability of the E7-25 storage device);
- an experimental facility for the dynamic compression of substances.
