Brief Description of Technology
Short-time electrical supply installations play an important role in such spheres as time maintenance of voltage during break-downs, in power supply systems for electrophysical installations (e.g. tokamaks and arc gas heaters) and electromobile transport. A flywheel, made by metallic forging, is usually used as the energy storage element. There are two main directions for the improvement of inertial energy storage. The first is connected to the production of flywheels with a relatively low mass index (g/J) for energy transport equipment. A tungsten flywheel for an experimental test-bench has been manufactured at our institute (mass: 4 t, diameter: 1820 mm, rotational speed: 6000 RPM). It was necessary to develop a special technology for the production and the elaboration of titanium forging. The second direction is connected to the maximum rise of energy accumulated in one flywheel installation. Today, the energy storage of one horizontal flywheel made from alloyed steel for installations with a rotational speed of 3000 RPM is not higher than 109 Joule. The flywheels were manufactured by the joint-stock company “Izhorskie Zavodi” (5 flywheels with an overall mass of 81 t).
Legal Aspects
The flywheels were constructed and manufactured according to technical standards. They were used in unique installations for the electric supply for large tokamaks.
Author certificate “Steel” (USSR N 1317904, 1987).
Special Facilities in Use and Their Specifications
Full complex of equipment for the investigation of the physical and mechanical properties of steel forgings.
There is a disk with a diameter of 2,000 mm and a thickness of 600 mm, made from highly pure steel, from which experimental flywheels with a fluidity limit of 850 Mpa can be produced.
