Exercise 2 Read the text and then speak about the fellow's regrets. Use ten wish-sentences and conditional sentences.
"I live in a squalid flat. I'm out of work and on the dole. I didn't have a good education; in fact I left school at fifteen without any qualifications. I wrote about fifty job applications and didn't get a single job. I went for a lot of interviews, but I don't really know how to behave at interviews, I can't answer their questions very well.
I sit about at home every day, watching TV, and smoking. I get through about forty cigarettes a day, so I don't have enough money to go to football matches any more. A friend of mine from school has got a job at a travel agent's. He travels all over the world for his holidays, and he's always telling me about wonderful trips to Spain and Greece. I've never been abroad! I'm so depressed. I think the worst thing is having nothing to look forward to. I'm, nineteen, and I have a lifetime of nothing in front of me
Watch out! Oblique moods don’t follow the rules of sequence of tenses. The usage of the Subjunctive II depends only on the fact whether the action is simultaneous or prior to that of the main clause. ü Present Subjunctive II is used for the action that is simultaneous to that of the main clause. He wishes he were a millionaire. He wished he were a millionaire. He will wish he were a millionaire. ü Past Subjunctive II is used for the action prior to that of the main clause. He wishes he had won that lottery. He wished he had won that lottery. He will wish he had won that lottery |

Exercise 6 Read the story below and rewrite it using wish-sentences.
It was Saturday morning and Mrs Jenkins had to go to the supermarket to buy the weekly groceries. The car park was full, so she parked on the street. The supermarket was so crowded that it took her over an hour to do her shopping. When she got to the cashier, she realised that she had left her purse in the car, so she couldn't pay for her groceries. She went to the car to get her purse but the street was empty and her car had disappeared. She called the police to report that her car had been stolen. The police told her that her car had been towed away because she had parked it in a no-parking zone. Her husband had to go down to the police station and pay the fine so that she could get her car back.

Exercise 7 a) Listen to people talking about their schooldays (Streamline Unit 43). Be ready to talk about their present and past regrets using wish-sentences (She wishes … She wished …).
b) Write a paragraph about your schooldays. Use at least six wish-sentences. Start with ‘I wish’ to write about your present regrets and start with ‘I wished’ to write about the regrets you had when you studied at school.
E.g.: When I studied at school I wished I didn’t have so many maths classes. Now as I work at university and count points all the time, I wish I had studied maths better.
