To P e r f o r m. Give the deck of cards to a person for shuffling

Give the deck of cards to a person for shuffling. Afterward, take the cards back and hold them in your left hand, facedown. Ask the person to cut off any amount of cards as you point to the table indicating to your helper where to put the upper half she cuts off.

Ask your helper to look at the card on top of the left-hand pile. While she is looking at the card, press the first finger of your right hand into the little pile of salt that’s either on the table or in your right pocket. Do not wet your finger before you do this—a few grains of salt will stick to it without any help (photo 1 is an exposed view).

Say, “Have you remembered your card? Good. Now please put it back.” The person will return her card on top of the pile in your lefthand. Now, point to the top of that pile of cards in your left hand with your right first finger and lightly

touch it (photo 2). You will secretly leave a few grains of salt there as you say, “Please pick up the cards from the table and put them on top.” Once the person has placedthe cards on top of those in your

left hand, the deck will have been 1 completely reassembled—with a

little something extra on top of the chosen card.

Gently place the deck of cards
on the floor. Give the cards a little
nudge with your foot. Because you
have secretly placed some salt on
top of the person’s card, the deck
will cut itself at that point (pho-
to 3—the chosen card is the one
whose back is most visible in the
center of the spread). Lift off the
top card of the lower half and turn
it over to reveal the chosen card.

Criss tells his friends that even though he looks okay, he actually died performing in the TV series MINDFREAK. He proves it by asking some of them to take his pulse—but he doesn’t have one and so he must be dead.

You need a small round ball, about the size of a golf ball. Place it under your armpit—actually against your skin.
