Bring out the two fake cards, holding them in your right hand. The double-backed card is on top of the double-faced card and spread to the right (photo 1). The audience sees one facedown card and a faceup six of clubs. Your right thumb presses lightly on top of the facedown
card while your right fingers press
upward against the underside of the
double-faced card. | ||
Now you’re going to display
both sides of the cards. This re-
quires a secret move that’s easy
to learn. You must do two simple
things at the same time. First, turn
your right hand over until it is
palm down. Second, your thumb
and fingers slide the two cards in
opposite directions—your thumb
slides the facedown card away from
you, while your fingers slide the
faceup card toward you (photo 2).
Both of these simple things must be
done simultaneously, so that your |
thumb and fingers are exchanging the positions of the cards as your hand turns over.
To those watching it looks like you’re displaying two regular cards— each with a normal face on one side and a back on the other.
Turn your right hand palm up again, reversing the secret move so the faceup six of clubs is spread to the left beneath the facedown card.
Your left hand takes the facedown card and inserts it into your left shirt pocket so it goes between the card already in your pocket and your chest.
Your right hand, holding the six of clubs, goes behind your back. Ask a person to name the card that’s behind your back. The person will say “six of clubs.” Secretly flip the card over with your right fingers and bring the card back around in front of you to reveal the jack of hearts. Your left hand removes the double-backed card from your left shirt pocket and returns it to your right hand so it is on top of the fa-ceup jack and spread to the right.
Turn your right hand palm down, performing the secret move to show the six of clubs as the card just removed from your pocket. Turn your right hand palm up again, reversing the secret move. The jack of hearts and a facedown card will now be visible.
Your left hand takes the facedown card and inserts it into your left shirt pocket so it goes between the card already in your pocket and your chest.
Your right hand, holding the jack of hearts, goes behind your back. Ask a person to name the card that’s behind your back. The person will say “jack of hearts.” Say, “No, I have the jack of hearts here,” as your left hand removes the normal card (outermost) from your left shirt pocket. At the moment that your left hand turns the card around so the face of the jack of hearts is revealed everyone will be watching your left hand. So, your right hand inserts the double-faced card into your rear pants pocket and removes the normal six of clubs.
Now your right hand can bring the six of clubs out from behind your back. Toss both cards onto the table for examination.

Spoon Bending for Beginners
Criss lets someone hand him an ordinary metal spoon from the table. He takes it and, with great effort, bends it completely in half. A second later he magically restores it to its original state.
