Lay the string across the table so the ends are to the right and left. Open the handkerchief and place it over the center of the string. It’s important that both ends of the string stick out from under the hand-kerchief (photo 1).
Ask if someone can lend you a finger ring—any type will do. Now bring out the little safety pin and drop it on the table.
Pick up the ring and safety pin, then slide your hands under the handkerchief. Put down the safety pin so you hold only the ring.
Take the center of the string and pull it through the ring making a small loop (photo 2, in which the handkerchief has been removed so you can see what’s happening under it).
Next, pick up the safety pin and open it. Stick the safety pin through the two strings (the point of the pin must pierce the center of each strand of string) to the right of the loop you’ve just made (photo 3, in which the handkerchief has been
removed so you can see what’s happening under it). It may take some practice because you cannot see what your hands are doing and you do not want to stick yourself with the pin!
Once the pin is in place, stick your left first finger into the loop of string you pulled out a moment earlier and press it firmly against the table (photo 4, in which the handkerchief has been removed so you can see what’s happening un-
der it).
Ask someone to pull the right end of the string. Once the string is pulled taut, the safety pin will press against the ring and hold it in place on the string as it emerges from beneath the handkerchief (photo 5 shows the spectator’s hand pulling the ring into view). You must keep your left first fin-
ger in the loop until the string has slipped all the way around it. The audience will not see that the left end of the string disappears under the handkerchief for a few seconds longer than it should.
When you feel the end of the string with your left fingers, grab it and pull the handkerchief away with your right hand so the audi-ence can see that the ring has magi-cally become linked to the string. Remove the safety pin and hold the string up for everyone to see (photo 6).
Finally, return the ring to the per-son from whom you borrowed it.

Two-Card Monte
Criss shows two cards, the jack of hearts and the six of clubs. He puts the jack of hearts behind his back and asks someone which card he has placed out of sight. The person will say, “jack of hearts.” Criss magically removes the six of clubs from behind his back.
