The ship has to conform with SOLAS requirements in relation to the type, number and position of the portable and fixed fire fighting appliances provided for use in any fire situation. These requirements are detailed in SOLAS Chapter II-2, Part D and Chapter 7, Part C.

The SOLAS regulations detail all of the design criteria required to provide the necessary fire protection cover for all areas on the ship.

The plans illustrate the positions of the portable fire fighting equipment including extinguishers and hoses, whilst also detailing the positions of other items of the ship’s equipment which may be required in a fire situation, such as fire plans and fire pumps.

When a vessel is built, a Fire Control and Safety Plan is drawn up in accordance with SOLAS regulations. The plan is normally formulated on a standard General Arrangement drawing which include many details not necessary on a poster which should detail the vessel's fire and safety equipment only. Further, for identifying the various equipment, symbols denoted by the yards are used. Quite recently, however, the IMO introduced standard symbols for use in detailing all fire and safety equipment depicted on fire and safety plans.

Fire Control Plans show the general arrangement of the ship. This plan should include the following information for each deck:

1) Location of machinery.

2) Fuel tanks.

3) Fire control stations.

4) Fire detection systems.

5) Fire alarm systems.

6) Deck plans.

7) Location of fire extinguisher appliances.

8) Ventilating system including fan and damper positions.

9) Identification numbers of fans serving each section.

These plans may be laid out in booklet form to be issued to all key personnel and ship’s officers. A copy of these plans must be permanently exhibited aboard the ship. Another copy should be permanently stored in a prominently marked, weather-tight enclosure outside the deckhouse for the assistance of shore-side fire fighting personnel. Extra copies of these fire control plans should be mounted on each deck level in a highly visible location. The container should be marked "Fire Control Plans".
