The Matron Saint of Word Botchers.

There‘s one in every family and every office- the lovable relative, the high –and- mighty boss, or the clueless coworker who mangles the language malappropriately, the one who, when confronted with a choice between two words that sound alike, inevitably utters the wrong one.

”You‘ve got to read these Buddhism, - writes one devotee of Anguished English. Bud’s the guy at work who keeps tripping on his own tongue and stepping on his syllables - the one who, without the slightest prevarication, tells his office mates, ”No more negotiating- it‘s a dumb deal ” (на самом же деле он хотел сказать donedeal – дело в шляпе).

Bud is suppository (пароним слова depository, что означает: хранилище, склад) of vagrant vocabulary. Bud yearns for a salary commiserate (соболезновать) with his experience. Bud имел в виду commensurate - соответственный, пропорциональный). Bud sees every crisis in the office as a potential disastrophe (в данном случае произошло слияние двух слов: disaster - бедствие и catastrophe - катастрофа). Bud is clearly the employee most likely to become a wealthy typhoon (подразумевалось tycoon – богач). Watch out, or Bud will sue you for deformation of character (вместо слова деформация, было бы уместнее употребить слово defamation, что переводится как клевета, оскорбление личности).

Or there‘s Hazel, a favorite member of somebody‘s family who just wants a little piece of quiet. Naturally, her misspoken words are called Hazelisms. Hazel’s the one who telephones the family, “Come see me at the airport. We have a two-hour hangover. ”(Конечно, она не имела в виду ‘похмелье‘. Подразумевалось слово stopover - остановка). Hazel will likely tell you: ”My cat Queenie has feline leukemia, and I may have to have it euphemized (пароним слова euthanize - усыпить). If Queenie stops breathing, I will give her VCR “. (‘ Video Cassette Recorder ‘- видеопроигрыватель. It sounds like CPR - ‘ Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ’, which really should be used in this situation).

And Hazel is a veritable depository of information and of advice: “Don‘t ever wear yellow, dear. It makes your skin look shallow and emancipated ” (не эмансипированный, а ‘изнурённый‘- emaciated). ”When shipping fragile items, I always pack my box with xylophones “ (S tyrofoam - ‛полистерон‛, а ксилофон – это музыкальный инструмент).

The points she makes are always mute (mute – немой - пароним слова moot - спорный) - which I guess means they go without saying. She really knows how to get to the crust of the matter. (Звучит как crux - суть).

Malapropisms are named after an ‛old weather-beaten she-dragon‛, Mrs. Malaprop, the comic centerpiece of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 1775 play, The Rivals. Her name derives from mal a´propos, which means ′out of place, inappropriate′. That’s exactly what the words she uses are.

In trying to impress others, particularly the wealthy Anthony Absolute, Mrs. Malaprop attempts to show off her inflated vocabulary.

The trouble is the dowager doesn’t know the meaning of big words. So she constantly confuses them with similar-sounding ones, inserting them into sentences in which they don’t belong. She laments “my affluence (она имела ввиду influence) over my niece is very small because the young woman is “as headstrong as an allegory (конечно, она хотела сказать alligator) on the Nile“. Still, the dowager urges her niece to ‛ illiterate ‛ (неграмотный; следует использовать obliterate -вычеркивать) an ‛illegible ‛ (неразборчивый; пароним слова eligible -подходящий) gentleman from her memory.

You might say that Mrs. Malaprop set out to be a bird-watcher, but ended up a word-botcher. What makes the situation especially humorous is that she is completely unaware of her verbal vagaries: “Sure, if I reprehend anything in this world, it is the use of my oracular tongue and a nice derangement of epitaphs “. She meant, of course, that if she comprehended anything, it was the use of her oral tongue and a nice arrangement of epithets. Such errors illustrate the truth of Alexander Pope’s pronouncement “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing“.

In The Daily Targum, the student newspaper at Rutgers University, we read, “As soon as Jill Eikenberry, former L. A. Law star, discovered a lump on her breast in 1984, she knew it was cancer…“ So far, so good. But then: “The first doctor that Eikenberry consulted immediately recommended a radical vasectomy, the removal of the entire breast“ (вазэктомия - операция по удалению части половых органов. На самом деле требовалась другая операция: mastectomy - удаление молочной железы).

A flyer issued by an electric supply company in Philadelphia extolled the virtues of its health lounge chair vibrator kit: “Why not transform your ordinary reclining lounge or health chair into a really relaxing, enervating vibrating chair?“ Nice try with that big word enervating. But the word means ‛weakening‛, exactly the opposite of what the ad writer thought (в данном случае было бы лучше использовать слово invigorating - дающий силы, укрепляющий).

A junior high school principal actually announced over the public address system, “Students must stop conjugating in the halls. This is inappropriate behavior“. In mass defiance, the boys and girls roamed the hall intonating: “I am, you are, he is, we are, you are, they are” (имелось в виду слово congregate – собираться, а не conjugate - спрягать).

Mrs. Malaprop first bestrode the stage more than two hundred years ago. But this grande dame of 18^th century comedy remains an aspiration to the erroneous, albeit euphonious, vocabulary that ricochets from our tongues and caroms off the roofs of our mouths.

9.	During the last decade, the direction of Wolverine World seemed to hang in libido.
	Libido – половое влечение. Грамотно: During the last decade, the direction of Wolverine World seemed to hang in limbo (состояние неопределенности). In limbo в медицине, например, означает ‘между жизнью и смертью, в подвешенном состоянии, на границе ада’. Limbo – предположительное место пребывания некрещеных младенцев и праведников, живших до рождества Христова. В переносном смысле – место, где находятся потерявшиеся, пропавшие люди.
10.	We have to deal seriously with this serious offence as a detergent to others.
	Detergent - моющее средство. Вместо detergent правильнее было бы употребить deterrent - средство устрашения; сдерживающее средство.
11.	I think this portfolio is a good example of my writing and an accurate betrayal of it.
	Betrayal - измена, предательство. Пароним слова portrayal – представление, описание, образ, отражение.
12.	We have a new wienie dog. It is datsun.
	Wienie dog – собака-сосиска (wienie – сокращенная форма от wiener – сосиска, колбаска). Имеется в виду парода собак dachshund (такса).

These modern-day malaproprisms are not prefabrications. They are not pigments of imagination (not ‛pigments‛, but ‛ figments ‛- вымыслы). Rather, they were all actually uttered and reordered, plucked from the hum and buzz of real-life conversations and leaving us in a variable state of suspended admiration.
