I wish I could take back some of the things that being a Police Officer brings upon me. I never imagined the world could be so cruel. I put my badge on and become a different type of man. You’re doing your best to protect everyone, but you become a target because of your badge, and a monster because you wear a gun. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve heard, “Cops never grow up. They just like to play with bigger toys”. Even my parents have said, “When are you going to stop playing cops and robbers and get a real job?” I only wish that these “games” weren’t for real. They are often deadly and the wrong move or word kills. I go out every day and have loads of fun, looking down the barrel of a gun pointed at you, or fighting a kid gone wild on drugs.
How many of you would trade places with me? Come along, stand beside me when I arrest a kid who has assaulted me. Stand in front of a crowd of drunken partiers, and tell them that they are too loud. How about writing a ticket to your pastor’s mother, and the person you just arrest happens to be your best friend’s brother? Could you be the one to tell a mother that her child has just died at the hands of another? Or arrive at the scene of an accident where an infant has just died of a broken neck because he was not in his child seat. Not me, you say? Then tell me who will do a job that you don’t care to do?
It isn’t all bad, for in this world there are still a few that utter a phrase that keeps me going; “Officer, thank you for being there, and for all your help”. That one small phrase seems to make all the bad things melt away, and all the sacrificesbecome meaningful. In my heart I know by far that I would rather be a Police Officer than anything else.
I see now, it is not the status, nor the money you have in life, but the person you become. I am proud to say that, “I AM A POLICE OFFICER, AND I CARE”.
