Owens Community College began operations under the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Education on September 13, 1965. By 1991 the enrollment had reached 9,544 students attending classes on two campuses. The mission of the College is to provide technical and general education that meets the needs of its students and the employers in the service area. The College is committed to prepare every graduate to succeed in the chosen area, to make a positive contribution to society. It offers a two-year degree in arts, sciences, applied sciences, business and technical studies.
One of the programs is Law Enforcement Technology leading to Associate of Applied Science Degree. This program is offered to students interested in a career in law enforcement and designed to equip students not only with technical skills necessary for a law enforcement officer, but also with the social understanding needed to perform in the expanding area of crime prevention. With an increasing demand for well-educated law enforcement personnel, the graduates can expect job opportunities in public and private agencies, juvenile and adult corrections and industrial and campus security.
The program is to be completed in two years. Here are the courses that are studied during four semesters.
First Semester: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminal Law and Procedure, Community Relations/Criminal Justice, Fundamentals of Computing Systems, Composition I, Sociology, First Responder.
Second Semester: Corrections Theory and Practice, Constitutional Law, Patrol Operations I, Juvenile Delinquency, General Psychology, Composition II.
Third Semester: Criminalistics, Criminal Evidence, Patrol Operations II, Abnormal Psychology, Criminology, Defensive Tactics.
Fourth Semester: Criminal Investigation, Criminal Justice Administration, Criminal Justice Practicum, Speech or Conference Methods, American Government, Firearms.
