Why did you choose to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor? I wanted to be a doctor; it was my college in Beijing that thought I was more suited to TCM than Western medicine. How different is TCM to Western medicine? It’s very different. Western medicine is based on science. TCM is based on thousands of years of experience and philosophy. Are you surprised that TCM is now popular in the West? No, Westerners see the value of TCM in treating certain illnesses. If you have insomnia, a Western doctor will prescribe sleeping pills. But we’ll look for the underlying reasons why you’re not sleeping and then use acupuncture to resolve that. Do you use TCM when you’re ill? Absolutely. I’d never go to Western medicine hospitals unless I had a very specific illness, like heart disease, which we don’t treat here.
