Home to the China Buddhism College, this temple was established in the 7th century and buzzes with worshippers and student monks. Be sure to see the recently restored Guanyin Hall, which has several statues of the Goddess of Mercy.

Beijing’s largest and most important mosque dates back to the 10th century and is a fascinating mix of Islamic and Chinese architectural styles. People here are friendly, but dress appropriately and avoid it on Friday, the Muslim holy day.

One of the best places in town to hunt for silk; there’s an incredible selection of Shandong fabric here. It also sells ready-made, traditional Chinese clothing on the 2nd floor.

Peddling pills and potions since 1669, this was the former royal dispensary. Now, it claims to be able to cure anything from fright to encephalitis. Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors are available for on-the-spot consultations.
ALL THE TEA IN CHINA
South of Beijing West Railway Station is Maliandao, the largest tea market in northern China. Although it doesn’t have all the tea in China, there’s an awful lot of it here and most vendors are happy to let you taste some of their brews. Maliandao Lu itself has loads of tea shops, where you can pick up tea sets and tea at cheaper prices than you’ll find in the stores in tourist areas. To get here, take the subway to Junshibowuguan and then a taxi.
