Beijing’s finest and most extensive selection of whiskies combine with painstaking attention to detail – think shaved ice cubes – to make this Japanese-style bar a spot for drinking connoisseurs. It’s on the 2nd floor; take the stairs on the right of the building.
MESH Bar

Designed to within an inch of its life, Mesh is achingly trendy with fancy light fittings, a white bar and mesh screens separating the different areas. But it’s still fun and the bartenders know their stuff. On Thursday, it’s gay friendly.

It gets packed when there’s a big game on – this is a key place for watching sport – so get here early and grab a spot at the bar, or head upstairs, where there’s a pool table. It does pub grub, and the daily happy hour runs till 8pm.

Unselfconsciously cool, Q Bar is one of Beijing’s hot spots and is hopping at weekends. Thankfully, there’s room to spread out inside, or you can head to the excellent rooftop terrace. There’s a big ‘Q’ hanging off the side of the Eastern Inn Hotel to guide you there.

Sanlitun is hardly down Mexico way, but after a few of its potent margaritas you might think it is. Burritos and fajitas are made too, and the place is always heaving with a 20-something crowd.

This serene, up-scale spa is the perfect place to rejuvenate after a hard day pounding Beijing’s streets. There are great Chinese or Thai massages, as well as wraps and facials. The foot reflexology massages are especially good. There are 40% discounts before 5pm during the week. It’s opposite the north gate of the Workers Stadium.
KARAOKE
Karaoke bars (known as ‘KTV’) are everywhere in Beijing. They’re where Beijingers go to unwind after work and to celebrate. Renting a room to wail out the latest mando-pop hits with your friends might seem odd to Westerners at first, but once you get over the shyness of singing in public (alcohol helps), karaoke is a lot of fun and surprisingly cathartic. The best way to try it is with some locals; otherwise head to Melody ( 6551 0808; A-77 Chaoyangmenwai Dajie; rooms per hr from Y79; 8am-2am), which has a selection of English-language tunes as well as snacks and drinks. If you’re lucky, the staff might help you out with some backing vocals.
