A lovely, low-key bar, at its best on a summer evening, the Stone Boat has mellow live music and an outside area where you can sip your drink beneath the trees of Ritan Park. During the day, it’s an equally pleasant cafe. To get here after the park shuts, tell the guards at the south gate where you’re going and they’ll let you in.

How would you describe the clothes you design? They’re not really traditional, although we use traditional embroidery. I think I take elements of classic Chinese clothing and mix them with Western styles. Why do you use embroidery from Guizhou province in all your designs? I think that embroidery is a really valuable treasure of our country. I wanted to help preserve it and I think creating a market for it is the best way to do that. Can you compare the way women dress in Beijing now with when you were growing up here in the 1970s? Well, when I was young there was no such thing as fashion in Beijing. Now, women have so many more choices and they dress much more sexily. Are Beijing women the most fashionable in China? I think so. In Shanghai, the women mostly want to wear Western labels and they wear what the magazines tell them to. Beijing women are more open-minded and independent.
