Chaoyang south of Ritan Park has undergone the mother of all make-overs in recent years. Posh apartment and office complexes have sprung up in the central business district (CBD), and in their wake have come fashionable eateries and bars. The extraordinary and spectacular CCTV building dominates the CBD, which is located just northeast of Jianguomenwai Dajie, and makes a great landmark for visitors.
But south Chaoyang is also one of Beijing’s premier shopping zones. The Panjiayuan Antique Market heaves at weekends with locals and visitors searching for hidden treasures, while the Silk Market’s huge range of knock-off goods draws crowds every day. There are also up-scale malls, housing the best local fashion designers and foreign labels.
New subway line 10 cuts north–south through the area, while the venerable line 1 runs east–west. They’re a better option than taxis during the day, when the roads here are super-busy.
