Dominated by its huge lake and the White Dagoba that sits on an island in the middle of it, Beihai mixes culture – temples and pavilions to explore – with the chance to laze the day away on a pedalo (Y40, Y200 deposit). You can also enter the park from the north gate on Di’anmen Xidajie.

Opened in 2006 to much acclaim, the Capital Museum has raised the bar for every cultural institution in town, thanks to both its thoughtful presentation of some very impressive exhibits and the showcase building (see) housing them. The galleries track the evolution of Beijing, as well as highlighting major Chinese cultural achievements. There are displays of porcelain, jade and Buddhist statues, but be sure to visit the fascinating gallery devoted to Beijing folk customs. An audio-guide is Y30 with a Y100 deposit.
HOUHAI
The three lakes that make up the Shichahai area are collectively known to Beijingers as Houhai, and are a great place to see the locals at play. In summer especially, Houhai is one of the most popular night-time destinations in the city. Pedalos jostle for space on the lakes, and young Beijingers crowd out the bars and restaurants that line the shores. Meanwhile, the older generation indulges in some sedate ballroom dancing or lounges shore side gossiping. Houhai is pretty busy in the winter too, when the lakes freeze over and they become the best place in Beijing to ice skate.
