It was a lovely, warm summer's evening. Debbie and Darren had just arrived at their friend, Gary's house for dinner. Standing in the doorway, they smiled happily as he invited them in.

They were chatting cheerfully when suddenly a strong smell filled the room. Worried, Darren turned to Gary and said "Is something burning?"

Suddenly, the smoke alarm sounded noisily. Gary ran out of the room and a moment later frantically shouted. "Oh no! the kitchen's on fire!" Alarmed we ran outside and called the fire brigade. Within minutes the house was in flames. The firefighters arrived quickly and immediately went to work.

Gary, Debbie and Darren huddled together outside as they watched the fire being put out. They were frightened and upset but relieved that no-one was hurt.

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. Mark and Paul were walking along the beach carrying their surfboards. The golden sand felt warm under their bare feet.

They came to a sign which read "No swimming -Sharks". They ignored the sign and went into the water.

They were surfing when a shark appeared a few metres away. Paul yelled to Mark, "Mark! Jump onto my board and push yours towards the shark." As Mark jumped on Paul's board, he pushed his toward the shark. They paddled quickly toward the beach. They looked back and saw Mark's board in pieces.

When they were safe on the beach, they collapsed onto the sand. They looked at each other and they both knew that they were lucky to be alive!

Police Constable Mark Harris was driving through the wet streets of Bristol, thinking about his warm, comfortable bed. It had been a long day, and he was very tired.

Suddenly, he noticed two young men dressed in black running out of building. Feeling suspicious, Mark stopped the car and watched the two men jump into a red car and speed away. Just then he heard a voice scream, "Murder! Murder!"

Not stopping to think, Mark followed the red car at top speed. As he approached the car he heard a gunshot, and then a bullet went through the windscreen of his car. Mark decided to ask for help. A few minutes later he saw two police cars up ahead, blocking the road. The red car screeched to a stop and the two young men jumped out and started running, but Mark was too fast for them. "Stop! Police!" he yelled. Realising they were trapped, the two men slowly raised their hands into the air.

The other police officers handcuffed them and pushed them into the car. "Nice work," one of them said. “Thanks,” said mark. “I think I’ve done enough for one day, though. See you tomorrow.’

One morning Dan and Mark pushed their canoeonto the river. "Where's the map?" asked Dan. "I didn't bring it," replied Mark. "I know this river well."

Later they stopped to have a cup ofhot coffee. Suddenly they saw a kingfisher. "Wow!" cried Dan. "A kingfisher! Let's follow it!" They got back into the canoe and started following the tiny, colourful bird.

A short while later, they decided to turn around. "Oh, no! A waterfall!" Dan shouted. They were quickly getting closer to the edge, and they couldn't stop.

"Here! Catch!" someone shouted. Two fishermenthrew a rope to them and pulled their canoe to safety. Dan and Mark were tired, but relieved. "I don't know how to thank you," Mark said to the fishermen. "The important thing is that you're safe," the fishermen replied.

Bob and Ian slowly climbed higher and higher in the bright sunshine. It was a steep, dangerous mountain covered in snow. They were experienced climbers, but they were getting tired, so they decided to stop and rest inside a small cave.

They took off their packs and got ready to make some instant soup. Ian was just about to light their small stove when they heard a rumbling noise. Suddenly, snow and ice started falling outside.

Moments later, the snow had blocked the entrance to the cave. They were trapped in the cave and they were freezing cold and very scared. Bob radioed for help.

Three hours later, their rescuers arrived. It took six hours to dig Ian and Bob out of the cave. The rescue team explained that there had been a small avalanche.

After that, a helicopter took the frightened men to the Rescue Centre. "Will you give up climbing?" asked their rescuers. "No — but we won't go into any more caves," Ian said.
