1.London is the capital of Great Britain. The population of London is over 9 mln. people. It is one of the largest cities in the world. It lies on the banks of the river Thames. Fourteen bridges over the river carry heavy traffic from one side to another.
2.The history of London goes back to Roman times. Due to ist favorable geographical position a small town soon became an important trade centre.
3.The heart of the capital is the City. It is financial and business centre. It contains almost all important English banks and offices.
4. The East End is a very large district, poor and crowded. It is the district of docks, factories, little houses and narrow streets This district suffered greatly during World War II.
5. The West End makes a great contrast to the working district of London. It is full of the richest hotels, super markets, best cinemas. Only well to do people can live there.
6. Another important district of London is Westminster. Westminster Palace is the seat of the British Parliament. The Tower of the Houses of Parliament stands high above the city. Big Ben is the largest clock in the country. One can hear Big Ben strike every quarter of an hour. Not far away is Westminster Abbey with its Poet’s corner. It contains the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain. In London one can find the names of W. Shakespeare, I. Newton, and Ch. Darvin.
7. Every year a lot of tourists come to London to see the places of interest. They make sightseeing tours of the City, British Museum, National Gallery.
8.The Tower is one of the interesting places of London. It was a fortress,a royal residence, now it is a Museum. London is famous for its green parks. Hyde Park is one of them.
