Brief Description of Technology
Gamma-sources on the basis of cobalt and europium radionuclides with lateral working surfaces are designed for the use in radiative gamma-facilities where biotechnological processes are implemented.
SUGGESTED TECHNOLOGY FOR CONDUCTION OF THE RESEARCH
A Co+Eu2O3 absorbent composition with a europium oxide content of 15% to 30% is prepared by powder metallurgy. The proportion of europium oxide is chosen according to the necessary efficiency. The absorbing core is manufactured from the obtained composition and made to be used as a control rod in nuclear reactors. The core comes in form of a leak-tight insert. The inserts are withdrawn after reactor irradiation, installed in a second, leak-tight cladding. Then the control operations for -certification are carried out.
ADVANTAGES OF THE SUGGESTED TECHNOLOGY
No special irradiation devices are needed for the storage of radionuclides used in gamma-sources, which in its turn considerably reduces the source price.
EFFECT THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED IN THE COURSE OF THE RESEARCH

One source possesses high Co activity and has a Kg = 13.2 with a half-life of 5.27 years, whereas the Eu152 and Eu154 isotopes have a smaller Kg = 6.35... 6.7 but a longer half-life (from 8.59 to 3.54 years).
TECHNICAL MEANS AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH CONDUCTION
The SSC RIAR has all necessary equipment for the production of gamma-sources on the basis of europium and cobalt:
— research reactors: SM-2, MIR, RBT-6, RBT-10, BOR-60;
— hot cells;
— production of inserts and control rods;
— equipment for control operations and gamma-source attestation.
