Past Simple (Прошедшее простое время)

 

Past Simple = V2

Past Simple употребляется для выражения действий, которые имели место или закончились в определенное время в прошлом.

Например:

They married in April, 1995 - Они поженились в апреле 1995 года.

She slept very badly last night - Она спала очень плохо в прошлую ночь.

Last winter I spent a lot of time in the library - Прошлой зимой я проводил много времени в библиотеке.

Вместо Past Simple для выражения повторяющихся, регулярных действий или длительных состояний в прошлом, не имеющих место и неактуальных в настоящем, часто употребляется used to (иметь обыкновение) в сочетании с инфинитивом смыслового глагола.

I used to write home twice a week - Я бывало писал домой дважды в неделю.

She used to get up early - Она обычно вставала рано.

Вопросительная форма данной конструкции образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола did:

Did he use to take English lessons? - Он раньше брал уроки английского языка?

Отрицательная форма образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола did и отрицательной частицы not (didn’t use to); либо в форме used not to:

He didn’t use to take English lessons. - Он раньше не брал уроки английского языка. - He used not to take English lessons.

1. Read a sentence about the present and then write it about the past.

Example: Tom usually gets up at 7.30. - Yesterday he got up at 7.30.

1. Tom usually wakes up early. Yesterday morning ……..

2. Tom usually walks to work. Yesterday ………

3. Tom is usually late for work. Yesterday ………

4. Tom usually has a sandwich for lunch. Yesterday ………

5. Tom usually goes out in the evening. Yesterday evening …….

6. Tom usually sleeps very well. Last night …….

 

2. Put the verbs into the correct form. All the sentences are in Past Simple.

Example: I didn’t go (not/to go) to work yesterday because I wasn’t (not/to be) very well.

1. Tom (not / to shave) this morning because he (not / to have) time.

2. We (not/ to eat) anything because we (not / to be) hungry.

3. I (not / to rush) because I (not / to be) in a hurry.

4. She (not / to be) interested in the book because she (not / to understand) it.

 

3. Put the verb into the correct form: Past Continuous or Past Simple.

Example: While Tom was cooking (to cook) the dinner, the phone rang (to ring).

1. George (to fall) off the ladder while he (to paint) the ceiling.

2. Last night I (to read) in bed when suddenly I (to hear) a scream.

3. …… you (to watch) television when I phoned you?

4. Ann (to wait) for me when I (to arrive).

5. I (not / to drive) very fast when the accident (to happen).

6. I (to break) a plate last night. I (to do) the washing-up when it (to slip) out of my hand.

7. Tom (to take) a photograph of me while I (not / to look).

8. We (not / to go) out because it (to rain).

9. What …. You (to do) at this time yesterday?

10. I (to see) Carol at the party. She (to wear) a really beautiful dress.

 

4. Put the verb into the correct form: Present Simple, Past Simple, Future Simple, Present Continuous, Past Continuous.

1. Where … your brother (to work)? – He (to work) at an Institute.

2. They (to listen) to the news on the radio when the telephone (to ring).

3. What …. your brother (to do) tomorrow?

4. I (to look for) a nice pair of gloves.

5. I (not / to go) to the shop yesterday. I (to go) to the shop tomorrow.

6. My train (to leave) in half an hour. – OK, I (to drive)you to the station in my car.

7. Where … Kate (to go) when you (to meet) her yesterday?

8. …. I (to check) the battery? – Yes, please.

9. Nowadays cars (to get) more and more expensive.

10. Yesterday the boss (to enter) the office at half past nine.
